Valencia CF 2010/11 season awards

Valencia has ended the season in 3rd place in the Spanish premier league and is directly going to the Uefa Champions League without having to go through one qualifier.

So who was the best summer signing for Valencia CF and who was the best player through this whole season, how do we come to such a conclusion!? Do you look at the official statistics, personal ratings, overall skill, team work all of the above or a mix of some.

Well I'll be looking at the official statistics, my own ratings I give to the players and just generally assessing who did better with the amount of playing time he got.

 Best Valencia CF signing for the 2010/11 season

The three runners for the best signing in the 2010/11 season are: Roberto Soldado, Alberto Tino Costa and Mehmet Topal.

Roberto Soldado has scored 18 goals and provided 3 assists in La Liga and has been on red hot form for the last 3 months. He works hard, he has good shooting ability and actually has got pace and explosiveness, something I’ve said he didn’t have in the mid-season awards. He has improved so much since then and has been so consistent, fast and explosive this second half of the season. He has also kept his good heading ability, but still lacks the mindset and loses his cool way too much as we have witnessed in several matches.
Roberto Soldado has also scored 6 times in the Uefa Champions League helping Valencia progress through the group stages.

Tino Costa started slowly only featuring after Ever Banega was injured, but has come off strong since then and has been really one of the main players this season. He has scored 4 goals and provided 1 assist in La Liga and has scored 2 goals in the Champions League.
Tino Costa lacks the possession ability where he can spread and dictate the match, but he is good in defending and tracking the ball as well as linking up with the attackers when really offensive. He also has great shooting ability as seen vs Turkish team Bursaspor, but he lacks in other areas such as dribbling, pace and long passing.

Mehmet Topal had to wait on David Albelda getting injured to truly come to the forefront and get consistant playing time, but he has taken his opportunity and established himself as a starter and as a good replacement for the aging David Albelda. He has started 21 games in La Liga and scored a goal in the process as well as provide 1 assists. He also has 1 assist in the Champions League, but really it’s the defensive aspects where Topal is the greatest. He has the speed, composure and field awareness to be able to close down opponents and cover them well. He keeps his passing simple and short, but this allows him to have a great passing accuracy and very few lost balls.


The best summer signing is: Roberto Soldado
He was bought to try and compensate for David Villa departure and at 10 million euros it was the biggest purchase of the summer. He was expected to score around 10 goals and than have other striker Aritz Aduriz alleviate some of the burden and together to catch up to Villa's goals, but Soldado has achieved much more. In fact he has scored 18 goals in La Liga and additional 6 more in the Champion League and all this while he had a quite long injury just at the start of the season.

Best Valencia CF player in the 2010/11 season

The three runners for the best player award are: Roberto Soldado, Juan Mata and Vicente Guaita.

Roberto Soldado has scored 18 goals and provided 3 assists in La Liga and has been on red hot form for the last 3 months. Juan Mata has scored 8 goals and provided 12 assists and some of the goals he has scored have been in crucial moments, earning Valencia all 3 points. He started the season slowly and sluggishly as many players participating in the world cup did and it wasn’t until the later stages of the first half of the season he really started stepping up his game. Juan Mata really came into his own after the winter break with some amazing plays and tons of assists in almost every match. He started the season low, but ended it on a high.
Juan Mata has also scored 1 goal and provided 3 assists in the Champions League, helping the team go through the group stages.

Vicente Guaita has been a revelation this season for Valencia. Originally the third goalkeeper it’s like in the fairytale’s how he came to become Valencia’s first choice goalkeeper when he was the 3rd choice keeper at the start of the campaign. It wasn’t until Cezar Sanchez and Miguel Angel Moya both got injured and for long period of time so the opportunity presented itself and Guaita took it.
Vicente Guaita started in 19 games in La Liga and 3 in the Champions league, making 67 saves in La Liga and 17 in the Champions League, some solid saves against Manchester United, putting him on the radar of Sir Alex Ferguson.

The best Valencia player is: Juan Mata
 It was a tough call between Roberto Soldado and Juan Mata, but at the end Mata deserves this more than anyone else. He is still very young, only 23 years old and while he shows amazing play, he still has so much more potential. This season he started slow, but as the season was progressing, so was Mata and he was playing better and better. In fact he singlehandedly saved the team couple of times with some late goals and/or assists. He is creative, has vision, technique and good passing ability and some very accurate crosses. Obviously a long term player for Valencia to build the team around.

The worst player for 2010/11 season

The three runners for the worst player of the season are: Chori Dominguez, Marius Stankevicious and Angel Dealbert. 

Chori Dominguez since his move to Valencia CF has failed to live up to his reputation and has fallen really low in the team pecking order. Originally bought to replace David Silva he utterly failed to do so. This season was his biggest chance to shine, but with only 2 good games and the other games all below average as well as constant arguing with the coach he soon became a fringe payer.
Undoubtedly a talented player, one of the best at Rubin Kazan but he failed to show off his skills at Valencia and coupled with his off field problems he has turned into a failure.

Marius Stankevicious ranks the lowest in my player ranks and this is why he is here. While he is a decent player, great passer, very fast, tall and hardworking he just lacks the positional awareness and tackling ability to be very effective. He has also had lapses in concentration and allowed for some ridiculous goals, which are responsible for lowering his rank so low. While he has had some good games he is just not Valencia quality and deserves this place.

Angel Dealbert is only here because of the voting I’ve made earlier about worst player and you voting his as worst player. In my view he is a good defender, not great, but can certainly hold his own and is a good player to have. He is very slow, sloppy on the ball and when under pressure makes mistakes, but if he only defends and instantly gets rid of the ball when at his feet, he is a valuable resource. He has had 2-3 bad matches, but he has had 5-6 good matches as well, in fact Valencia went on a 4-0 no goals conceded streak with him in the defense.

The worst Valencia player is: Chori Dominguez.
If players like Roberto Soldado and Tino Costa are the success story, Chori Dominguez is the opposite. He can talk the walk, but can't walk the walk. He has failed to help Valencia in any capacity, not with his play, not with his actions outside of the field, not with the constant arguing with the coach.
He just doesn't seem capable of doing anything right and is just dividing the dressing room and causing frictions. He should be sold and dealt with and he is rightfully deserving of the title worst player.

Official: David Albelda extends contract for 1 year with Valencia CF

David Albelda has signed a one year contract extension with Valencia CF reports Valencia official website. The deal will keep David Albelda in the club until 30 June 2012and it will be his 14th season with the club.

His new salary is reportedly bellow 1 million euros, which is a huge cut from his previous contract in which he was in the top 5 earners.

Albelda has won two La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey, one Spanish Super Cup, one UEFA Cup, and one European Super Cup with Valencia CF.

Official: Joma new Valencia CF shirt sponsor

Spanish company Joma has officially signed a deal with Valencia to make the club's kits for the next 5 seasons, until 2016.

VCF's kits for next season will be released on 30 June.

Joma launched a new website to kick start off their new advertising campaign and have an interesting video which shows off few Valencia players going to the field naked.

Joma is a big company, although it is based in the small city Toledo, the company sponsors Sevilla, Getafe and Albacete Balompié in Spain and will now sponsor Valencia CF. Valencia CF is the biggest club right now to wear Joma shirts and as the only team that is going to play in the Champions League that wears the Joma shirts Valencia is surely getting big money, certainly bigger money than it got from Kappa.

Valencia CF transfer news 2011/12

Ah, don't you just love summer. Not only for the hot weather and girls wearing less clothing , but also because of all the interesting transfer talk and speculation going around in the world of football.

Reports from Germany suggest that Hoffenheim, the club Andreas Beck plays for has officially put Andreas Beck on the transfer market in order to get as much money from his transfer as possible. Obviosly Valencia is tracking this player as he is one of the possible candidates to replace Miguel Brito at the right back position.

His current price is about 6 million euros, but with this latest move and call from Hoffeinheim president for offers for the player, who is also part of the German national squad is likely to rise and we are looking at 8-9 million euros.

Other in the news is more reports about Chori Dominguez and his final destination, which as in the movies can't be changed and he is 100% leaving Valencia one way or the other. There have been increasing reports from England that that may be his destination, as well as the older reports of him returning to his previous club Rubin Kazan and even Zenit St. Petersburg.
Right now though its a long shot to predict, but if I had to give an answer I'd have to say he is going to go back to some of his former clubs.

Is he a model, is he a midfielder, is he a goalkeeper?

Last but not least is Valencia CF resident model, part time midfielder and of course he would say goalkeeper, but that is something we Valencia fans have not seen. And this is not making joke on the player, he is actually very good and the times he was on goal this season he was superb, you can check my rating section to see his rank, but he was good, but its more of a poke at the club who often uses him as model, Emery who uses him as midfield, but rarely for the goalkeeper that he is.

Anyways latest reports are that  Zaragoza and Getafe have joined the list of clubs who want to get him in their ranks. Lets not forget that Sevilla are reportedly still keeping a close eye on him, as is his former club Real Mallorca. Right now Moya is worth about 2 million to 2.5 million euros, a far cry from the 5 million Valencia spend to get him.

Official: Vicente Guaita extends stay at Valencia

This is nothing new, basically the contract was already signed and Guaita was staying in Valenica, but this is just the official announcement.

Vicente Guaita contract has been extended to the year 2015, which means he is going to be in Valencia for 4 more years. He will have some additional competition next season in Diego Alves who came from Almeria, although his contract is still not officially presented.

Anyways this summer Moya is set to leave, Renan as well and there is still the discussion of whether Cezar should stay in the club or not.

At the official presentation of Guaita's renewal was Valencia president Manuel Llorente and Mayor María José Catalá. Llorente heaped praise upon Guaita as expected and encouraged him to continue working hard.

It was an emotional day for Vicente Guaita as he cried several times during the ceremony, but I guess its understandable, as he is signing for the one of the best teams in the world, certainly the best team in Spain and who wouldn't get emotional for such an honor.

Kevin Gameiro transfer to be resolved very soon

Last day of the championship on Sunday and the 50th goal of Kevin Gameiro in the colors of FC Lorient in the league, his 22nd of the season. This new realization was not enough to dethrone Lorient striker Moussa Sow, who, at the same time, scored a hat trick (his third this season) against Stade Rennais.

With the French league officially over Kevin Gameiro future at Lorient is set to be resolved in two weeks. Kevin Gameiro wants to transfer to Valencia CF and has told Lorient president about his decision and expects to know about his future in two weeks time, so that he is at ease in the summer.

The problem with the transfer is obviosly the transfer fee. The club want to sell Gameiro, Valencia want to buy him and the player himself wants to join Valencia, but the problem is that Lorient want to get between 10-12 million euros for him, while Valencia are willing to give between 6-7 million euros.

He is a first class striker and Lorient want to sell him, otherwise they would loose him next year for free, so Valencia president must make all efforts to sign him and yet not break the bank, so its a fine balance to keep.

Hopefully Valencia fans would see him at the Mestalla next season as he is one of the best strikers right now in Europe. In fact 11 clubs offered to buy Gameiro, but he reportedly refused all 11 clubs just to come to Valencia.

David Albelda to stay with Valencia

David Albelda had a meeting with Valencia CF president Manuel Llorente last week where they talked about increasing Albelda's contract by one year. Valencia president Llorente put a proposal on the table and its said that Albelda will become from one of the most paid footballers at the club right now to one of the least paid players if he accepts the new proposed contract. In fact the new salary is said to be bellow 1 million euros.

David Albelda has looked at the proposal and talked with his family about it and seems like he is going to accept the new contract in order to continue with Valencia. He has reportedly also had offers from other clubs in Spain, but his wish is to stay at Valencia and finish his career there.

I fully expect Albelda to sign one more year for Valencia CF, but this is football and anything is possible, so until its not official its merely speculations.
