Athletic Bilbao vs Valencia CF Match Preview

Athletic Bilbao vs Valencia CF Match Preview
Stadium: San Memes
Date: 04.10.2015 16:00 CET
7th matchday, La Liga
Coaches: Ernesto Valverde and Nuno Santo

Valencia CF are up against the always tricky opponent Athletico Bilbao and these two teams have been rivals in the past several seasons as both teams have fought over those top 4 positions that lead to the Champions league.

Athletic Bilbao have done okay in the past few years, looking at it historically they've technically been improving in modern history, getting higher and higher finishes on the table in the last 7-8 years, culminating in a Champions league position once, but that has been their highlight and they haven't stepped up from that.

They've also sold a couple of key players the past two seasons, so any sort of momentum they've had before has definitely been stopped and you could see it this season as they are struggling to get any results and are struggling at 18th position on the table with only 5 goals scored and 9 conceded goals.

Former Valencia CF player Artiz Aduriz has been a key player for Athletic Bilbao ever since he joined them, instantly becoming a crucial part of their team and scoring a lot of goals for them, in fact he has been their top goalscorer for three seasons now, after replacing Fernando Llorente.

Another key player for Athletic Bilbao is Markel Susaeta who's been their top assistor the last several seasons in a row, while their overall play has been to control the midfield and then with mixed passing get the ball to Aduriz who can score through headers and just the standard poacher way.

Valencia CF play has been slowly improving over the last couple of matches, it hasn't been any sort of significant improvement of any kind, but just slight improvements like making less mistakes in passing, less individual mistakes in midfield and defense and just try and play more cohesively overall.

Daniel Parejo has been solid in that playmaking role, spreading the ball effectively and contributing a lot in defense, something that he's improved immensely at since his arrival at Valencia CF. Big blow to Valencia CF is the injury to Enzo Perez who will be out for few weeks with a muscle injury of some sort, but good news is that Andre Gomes is back yet again and is ready to be included in the starting eleven, in fact judging from the training sessions its going to be Fuego, Parejo and Gomes in the midfield.

In attack its most likely going to be Paco Alcacer who didn't play against FC Lyon, though Nuno has been sticking with Negredo a lot, even though I don't think he's warranted it that much, so who knows, I wouldn't be surprised to see Negredo again, but most likely its going to be Paco. Feghouli has been having great games this season and I think he'll definitely start, unless he has bigger issues with fatigue, since he's been playing without long rest for a while now, but I think he is going to start, he usually has good stamina.
Since we are back in La Liga I think he is going to start Bakkali, the player has warranted his inclusion and has done well so far for us, so I think he is going to get the nod over Piatti.

Valencia CF Squad:
Goalkeepers: Doménech, Yoel
Defenders: Cancelo, Barragan, Mustafi, Santos, Vezo, Orban
Midfielders: Javi Fuego, Danilo, Parejo, Andre Gomes, Piatti, De Paul, Feghouli, Bakkali
Forwards: Rodrigo, Negredo, Paco Alcácer, Santi Mina

Technical Details Valencia CF (probable setups):
Formation: 4-3-3
Line-up: Jaume; Barragan, Mustafi, Vezo, Orban; Fuego, Parejo, Gomes; Bakkali, Paco, Feghouli.
Tactics: Low defensive line, own half pressure, mixed passing, counter attacks, attacking triangle.

Result Prediction:
Athletic Bilbao 1-1 Valencia CF
I know Athletic Bilbao are in bad form and they haven't look good on either end, they haven't scored a lot of goals and have conceded their fair share, but they've always been a tricky opponent for Valencia CF and they tend to play better against tougher opposition, so I'm sure they'll be much improved against Valencia CF and I expect a close match with both teams having several chances to score and each of them scoring once, with the ultimate result ending in a 1-1 draw.

FC Lyon 0-1 Valencia CF Match Report

Valencia CF won a tough match against FC Lyon and now sport 3 points from 2 matches in the Champions league. This was a positive surprise, I was expecting a loss in this match and then try and turn it around against Gent with two wins against them and get at least one more win at home, but this is just amazing, a positive result finally.

I predicted a 2-1 loss for Valencia CF, but the team surprised and managed a win against a very tough Lyon side playing on their home terrain. Lyon definitely had their fair share of chances and came close to scoring on several occasions, but what was luck, what was good saves by Jaume, they just couldn't place the ball in the net.

The match started with Lyon more on the offensive, though generally both teams were interchanging in attack and defense, it was one of those games where Lyon would attack for a while, then Valencia CF will get the ball and attack for a while and back and forth like that.

Olympique Lyon had one great opportunity through a free kick, the ball was heading into the net, but a wonderful parade by Jaume saved the goal barely. Lyon had few more chances, mostly through some mistakes by Mustafi who lost several one on one duels when coming a bit forward, but Valencia CF were lucky that Lyon couldn't capitalize.

Valencia CF had few chances as well, with Aymen Abdennour coming close to scoring on two occasions as he headed the ball just wide the first time and then headed the ball into the post, though unfortunately the rebound was ultimately cleared.
Pablo Piatti also had a shot on goal, but he sent the ball directly towards the goalkeeper, makingit easy for Lopes to make a save.

After breaking up a Lyon attack, Valencia CF would get a quick counter attack opportunity with Pablo Piatti moving the ball forward, he sort of moved in centrally, looked at who was available and sent a pass to the oncoming Feghouli who released a powerful long range effort that managed to beat the goalkeeper and end up in the net, giving Valencia CF the lead.

The second half was mostly Lyon attacking relentlessly and Valencia CF defending almost all the time, with the exception of few occasional forward drives, mostly counter attacking tries. In fact Lyon came close to scoring several times, they had several shots barely blocked at the last moment, with Aymen usually barely making that final block. Unfortunately Aymen got injured and had to be replaced by Santos who right off the gate made a crucial mistake as he lost his target and allowed a dangerous chance for Lyon, that thankfully wasn't converted on.

Lyon's most dangerous player was definitely Valbuena, causing all sort of troubles for the Valencia CF defense on both sides of the pitch as he was playing all around the pitch and changing positions often.

There would be a huge scare in the final minutes of the match as Lyon had a header and a shot saved by Jaume one after another, all coming from corner kicks from the left side. Thankfully the danger was cleared on the third corner in a row and Valencia's defense had a slight breathing room.

Ultimately Valencia CF would win the match 1-0, thanks to the goal from Feghouli in the first half. This is a crucial win for Valencia CF and one that gives the team good chances of making it through the group, though for this result to count the team would have to win twice against Gent.

Technical Details:
Olympique Lyon: Lopes, Jallet, Bisevac, Morel (Ghezzal, min 78), Um, Darder (Ferri, min 43), Gonalons, Tolisso, Valbuena, Kalulu, Lacazette (Beauvue, min 74)
Valencia CF: Doménech, Cancelo, Mustafi, Abdennour (Santos, min 59), Orban, Javi Fuego, Enzo Pérez (Danilo, min 84), Parejo, Feghouli, Negredo (Rodrigo, min 71), Piatti

Goals:
Sofiane Feghouli 0-1, 42 min. Assist Pablo Piatti

Player Ratings:
Jaume 8 - Make one great parade in the first half to keep the ball out of the goal, after a dangerous free kick and then made several saves in the second half, including two saves in stoppage time one after another to give Valencia CF the win.
Cancelo 7 - Improving with every game, was secure and confident when defending and went forward to a great extent in the first half.
Mustafi 5.5 - Was overall okay, but lost few one on one battles when coming out of the penalty area and that created danger for Valencia CF
Aymen 6.5 - Once again great one on one marking and tackling, had much better positioning and crucial with few blocks in defense before leaving injured.
Orban 6 - Was fairly good defensively and had one or two good forward movements.
Fuego 6 - Had a good game and his positioning was spot on all game, covering defensively superbly.
Enzo 6 - Mixed performance, had some good runs forward and some nice passes, tactically sound, but unable to play with Parejo in order to control the midfield.
Parejo 6.5 - Accomplished performance from the captain, led the front line and always tracked back and defended firmly.
Feghouli 6.5 - Scored a nice long range goal and was dangerous on occasions, but his forward drive was a beat weaker than usual as he wanted to slow down the game often.
Negredo 4 - Might as well been playing without him, barely touched the ball few times.
Piatti 6.5 - Good performance overall, made the best he can out of his runs and provided the assist for Feghouli's goal.
Subs:
Santos 4.5 - Made two giant mistakes both when he covered at the left back position as he lost the man he market twice. Don't know if he wasn't fully warmed up as Aymen had to be quickly replaced, but this wasn't a good performance.
Moreno 5 - Didn't really one up Negredo in any way, though he did track back a lot more and was playing in a more midfieldish role.
Danilo N/A - Not enough time

FC Lyon vs Valencia CF Match Preview

Olympique Lyonnais vs Valencia CF
Stadium: Stade de Gerland
Date: 29.09.2015 20:45 CET
2nd fixture, Champions League group stage
Coaches: Hubert Fournier and Nuno Santo

Valencia CF has a lot of work to do in order to move on to the next round of the Champions league, after an unexpected loss to FC Zenit int he first match. Now Valencia CF is arriving in France at the Gerland stadium to face Olympique Lyon. Technically this is a must win match in order to compensate for the loss against FC Zenit, but this is a tough opponent, playing at home and its going to be a tricky match.

Olympique Lyon once a top team in France and champions numerous times is now in a similar situation to Valencia CF this season, sitting 8th on the table with 12 points and struggling to get better results. They've also had no chance in the past few years as PSG has dominated the French league and winning the title.

Both Lyon and Valencia CF are the top 2 finishers in this group on paper and this would be a telling match for both teams as to where they stand. Theoretically they should be relatively evenly matched, but in practice it could be different and we'll just have to wait and see how this match plays out.

Valencia CF is still without the injured Gaya and Gomes, who were supposed to recover by now, but their injuries turned out bigger than initially thought. Good news is that goalkeeper Mathew Ryan is back with the squad and he's available for selection, but Nuno is likely continue with Jaume and give time for Ryan to find his full form and fitness before returning him to the starting position.

Valencia CF won the last match in the domestic league against Granada by one goal to zero, but it was a hard fought victory and didn't look too convincing, similar to how the team has been all season. The good news is that Ruben Vezo looked good at the defensive position and he's been impressive in all of his showings this season, so it will be interesting if Nuno Santo chooses to select him to start alongside Mustafi or Aymen who has been rested last matches supposedly to start fresh against Lyon.

Aymen hasn't convinced so far, he clearly has potential and seems strong individually in the tackles, but his positioning has been suspect and he is still clearly adjusting tactically how Valencia CF defend, so personally I wouldn't mind seeing Mustafi and Vezo paired as the central defensive duo.

Valencia CF Squad:
Goalkeepers: Doménech, Yoel, Ryan
Defenders: Cancelo, Barragan, Mustafi, Santos, Orban, Vezo, Aymen, Orban
Midfielders: Javi Fuego, Danilo, Enzo Pérez, Parejo, Piatti, De Paul, Feghouli
Forwards: Rodrigo, Negredo, Paco Alcácer, Santi Mina

Technical Details Valencia CF (probable setups):
Formation: 4-3-3
Line-up: Jaume; Barragan, Mustafi, Aymen, Orban; Fuego, Enzo; Parejo; De Paul, Paco, Feghouli.
Tactics: Low defensive line, own half pressure, mixed passing, counter attacks, attacking triangle.

Result Prediction
FC Lyon 2-1 Valencia CF
I think Lyon are going to use their home advantage good and score two times against us, especially since Nuno said that the team are coming to compete and win, so the team will be open for the attacks and Lyon having the home advantage can score two goals. I think Valencia CF are going to score as well, probably make it 1-1 and give us hope, but then concede again and lose the match!

Valencia CF 1 - 0 Granada La Liga 25/9/15

When you are playing at home with an expectant crowd against a team near the bottom you are expected to win and win well.  Especially when the value of your players is way beyond your opponents who are made up of cheap buys and free transfers.  When you have so many chances to score but miss each time then it is time for a change.  Does the manager go or is it the players who need changing.  That is what the Real Madrid supporters will be asking themselves tonight as they cry in their beer.  But who cares about them we are here to talk about Valencia.

The game began at a fast pace with both sides looking for the early goal but the play was scrappy and it was obvious that there was a lot at stake for both teams for different reasons.  Valencia were playing a 4.4.2.  with Paco and Negredo up front where a lot of people have been calling for for a long time.   Bakkali was being used on the left flank and was  causing all sorts of problems for the defence with his speed and agility and it was from his cross from the right that opened the scoring.
A corner was cleared and when it was returned to him he crossed for Mustafi to open the scoring with his first goal of the season with a powerful header into the top of the net.

The goal was welcomed by the players and fans with the enthusiasm of a last minute goal in a cup final, I think with relief as much as joy.  It wasn't to be all one way and Malaga had their fair share of chances with Jaume needing to be at his best to keep them at bay.

The wide players were being used well with Feghouli and Cancello on the right and Orban showing a bit more of his old self linking well with Bakkali on the left.  Parejo was showing his skills in the middle spraying the ball about well and Perez biting a few legs in the middle and picking up his customary yellow card for his efforts.

The team was showing good commitment and some good football was being played, well at least an improvement from earlier games this season.  Bakkali was replaced just after half time as he seemed to have run out of steam and Fuego came on for Perez who was nearing his second yellow but also looked to have not much energy left having given a good  display.
Alcacer looked to have increased the lead in the second half but replays show he was correctly ruled offside by the officials.

To be fair Granada looked a poor side but we just seemed to drop down to their level which we have seen too many times before and considering we beat them 4.0 last season shows that we have a lot to do. Their lack of skills though was made up by their hard work and non stop play.  They obviously fancied their chances of picking up some points from us after our poor start this season

The game ended with the single goal but as usual it could and should have been a bigger margin but we have got used to saying that now.  Another game without conceding though is also a positive to take considering the positional changes we have been making.

Conclusion

A very welcome 3 points to keep us in the running but still work to be done, however I think we are beginning to look a bit improved and with Gomes soon to return it is not all bad news.

Player Ratings

Jaume  7  Another great game pulling off a couple of  first class saves particularly one from a free kick. A decision soon to be made on the goalkeeper situation but surely he has to stay in place for now.
Cancello  6.5  Had a good game and his defending is improving, has a good understanding with Feghouli and made some great crosses.
Mustafi  6.5   Did well as usual but a couple of little mistakes which fortunately didn't cost us.
Vezo  7   This guy just never lets us down and is becoming a real star in my opinion.  I think we have never been beaten when he has played in a league game. Became a bit more confident in the second half with his passing out of defence.
Orban  6   I thought he did OK but is still below last years standard probably through lack of game time.  Certainly an improvement from the Espanol game
Parejo 7   Played really well and kept our game going with his accurate and clever passing.  Almost spoiled it though near the end with a lazy back heel in front of goal which could have cost us a goal.
Perez  6.5  I think we are seeing the real Perez now and his work rate is really high.  I think he is much improved but just seems to tire near the end. I don't think it is a problem though as we just bring on some fresh legs.
Bakkali  7   Always looks dangerous with the ball and made the only goal.   A real star for the future and hopefully will be able to do a full game when he gets up to match fitness.  He just adds that bit of extra to the attack that we have missed.
Feghouli 7   Obviously putting in the extra effort at the moment while his contract is still being discussed.  Maybe they should not rush it too much if he keeps playing like this.
Alcacer 5.5  I expected a bit more from him with Negredo with him but he was disappointing again, very close to scoring but he needs one to help his confidence I think.
Negredo 6.5   Works hard all over the pitch but still not looking  like he is ever going to get more than a goal every few games.

Subs

Piatti  5  ( 61 mins for Bakkali )  Tries hard but !, well, just but !

Fuego 6   ( 75 mins for Perez )   Did OK with his fresh legs.

Rodrigo ( 88 mins for Negredo )  Not enough time but I thought the booing and whistling when he came on near the end was not good.  That is not going to help his confidence and it is not his fault that we paid 30 million too much for him.

 GOAL   27 mins   Mustafi

Yellow cards   PEREZ,  MUSTAFI,  ORBAN.

Valencia CF vs Granada CF Match Preview

Valencia CF vs Granada CF Match Preview
Stadium: Mestalla
Date: 25.09.2015 20:30 CET
6th matchday, La Liga
Coaches: Nuno Santo and José Ramón Sandoval

Valencia CF is in a sort of mini crisis and I say mini because its still very early in the season, but on the other hand the start has been so bad that there is a genuine fear that the bad results are going to continue and that we've already lost too much momentum that we aren't going to be able to make up for it even if the team started getting results consistently.

Last match was a must win for Valencia CF to kick start its season, but the team slipped up again and couldn't even get one point from it, as Espanyol managed to achieve a small 1-0 victory. This much the stakes are even higher, the team is playing at the Mestalla, in front of the home crowd and arguable against an weaker opponent that the last one.
We know that opponents form and results don't matter much though, as teams that have conceded quite a lot of goals against other teams have conceded zero against Valencia CF, so past results and form of other teams seems meaningless when they face Valencia CF as Valencia's issues of scoring goals keep on persisting.

Granada CF are bottom of the table after 5 matchdays and while that doesn't tell us too much, by the end of the season they might even end up in the middle of the table, it does tell us that they are in a poor form, it does tell us that they are playing bad and it does tell us that winning in this game is absurdly important and anything else, but a comfortable win would be a gigantic disappointment.

Valencia CF coach Nuno Santo can't count on the injured Jose Luis Gaya and he's likely going to miss the match against Lyon in the Champions league as well, he still can't count on Andre Gomes as he is out injured as well, while Barragan, Aymen and Santi Mina have been given a rest. Back in the squad in Ruben Vezo who was injured for a while, though I'm not sure if he was injured all this time, it could have been or he just might not have found himself called up.

I'm certain that he'll field the strongest squad that he can, considering some of the injuries and stuff, but I'm expecting Parejo, Enzo, Feghouli, Negredo and Paco all in the squad. The issue is he's been playing Javi Fuego almost every match and I don't know if he can avoid not playing him tonight, since Enzo Perez also played last match and he always seems extremely tired at around the 60th minute, he obviously has huge stamina issues.

Valencia CF Squad:
Goalkeepers: Doménech, Yoel
Defenders: Cancelo, Mustafi, Santos, Orban, Vezo
Midfielders: Javi Fuego, Danilo, Enzo Pérez, Parejo, Piatti, Bakkali, Feghouli, De Paul
Forwards: Rodrigo, Negredo, Paco Alcácer

Technical Details Valencia CF (probable setups):
Formation: 4-4-2
Line-up: Jaume; Cancelo, Mustafi, Vezo, Orban; Feghouli, Danilo, Parejo, De Paul; Paco, Negredo
Tactics: High defensive line, own half pressure, short passing, counter attacks, long shots.

Match Prediction:
Valencia CF 2-1 Granada CF
Don't know how the match is going to play out, I'm hoping out for a win, I'm hoping there will be more fluid play in attack and we'd score more goals, but I've been thinking that for so many matches now and it hasn't happened.
I'm going to be optimistic here though and predict a hard fought 2-1 win.

3 things we learned from last match

Valencia CF suffered its first defeat in La Liga this season and while that doesn't sound too bad, the fact that the team only has 1 win is really worrying.

1: The new arrivals don't really improve the squad. I've mentioned this from the start, some of the additions to the team like Santi Mina, Bakkali, Danilo while talented and possibly future stars, they are  not ready to help this team right now. These are players that need to be developed and groomed and in 5 years time to have results with them, so why did we purchase these very young players when our team already had the youngest squad last season. Why make it even younger? There is barely any experience and barely any real reinforcements to boost the squad instantly.

So we are in a situation where we literally have no real replacement for Fuego, no replacement for Parejo, no replacement for Feghouli, no replacement for Piatti and with some of the players on a bad form like Pablo Piatti who hasn't contributed anything this season, unlike last season when he was scoring goals, providing assists and having big impact in games.

2: Nuno Santo doesn't really have a different style than counter attacking football. Last season it was counter attacking football most of the time and like or hate that style it worked, the team wasn't built to dominate games, the players were new and starting over and that style worked perfectly, allowing for the players to win games on their own individual talents.

This season though with some of the players misfiring a bit and having bad form and we see how hard it is to score goals, especially from open play. So I'm thinking the way Valencia CF goes back to winning ways is to start playing counter attacking football once again. Just sit deep in their own half, defend and when an opportunity presents itself do quick counter attacks and try and score from those.

3: The big money reinforcements at Valencia CF have been big disappointments. I'm talking about Alvaro Negredo, I'm talking about Rodrigo Moreno, I'm talking about Enzo Perez, all these expensive signatures have been big disappointments. I wouldn't call them failures, they've contributed their fair share and have had good games, but overall their contributions are not at the level of their price tag, meaning we overpaid for them by a significant margin.

Alvargo Negredo is not worth more than 10 million euros on his play from this and last season, Rodrigo Moreno is not worth the 35 million euros, again maybe 12 million worth for him, a bit more than Negredo as a potential future star and Enzo Perez somewhere in the region of 15 million, possibly even less.

RCD Espanyol 1 - 0 Valencia CF

It's always tough writing these match reports when the team doesn't perform. Well, it's another bad result but this time we walk away with no points gained instead of the usual draw. The pressure is building on Nuno and it showed on his face during this game. He was constantly sighing and scratching his chin not knowing what to do. The lesson from last game for the team was that doing the same thing over and over won't give different results and we need to create chances in a different way. This game had clear chances that could've decided the game but converting chances is still a huge obstacle for the team.

Nuno fielded a lineup with major differences from the previous game hoping new eager faces will shine through for him. Rodrigo finally got his chance in the center and was really lively but, and this might sound harsh, you need to finish one v one chances. We talked about this before. A one on one chance has to be converted especially from a Champions League team. Sure, you will have exceptional saves every now and then from keepers. But, most of our one on one efforts end up wasted and that cannot happen.

Valencia CF began the first half with lots of pressure on Espanyol, players were lively, the passing in general was a lot better than last game and chances were made. They were made and not taken. And from one corner kick, Espanyol took the lead. Despite constant pressure from Valencia CF, the curse continued and the team couldn't score. Second half, followed pretty much the same pattern with a flurry of yellow cards fired at both team in a short span of time. It was a half of many stoppages in play as the pressure was building up. As a result, Espanyol had a period where they were creating really dangerous chances and they would've converted if it weren't for Domenech making saves in quick succession. Gaya will likely miss the next game against Granada.

Other than Domenech having a great second half, there were other player performances that must be noted. Bakkali's introduction into the starting lineup was definitely a step in the right direction. I mean he dominated the Espanyol defence for almost the entire first half and even had a few shots on target after he cut inside just at the edge of the box. In contrast, Piatti who came in late in the second half had no where near the same impact, every time he would get the ball, he would lose it soon after. I don't know if you guys/gals agree with me on this, but Enzo's presence in midfield today was more effective. He was involving himself more in the attacking play, making good passes, through balls and having a few runs at the defense. He was playing more of a box to box that he's usual holding midfielder role, and this box to box play is what he was brought to do. This could also be a step in the right direction. However, to do this Nuno had two defensive midfielders in play in Fuego and Danilo Barbosa. I feel that took away from the potential of the 4-3-3, it was more like a 4-2-3-1. Since both de Paul and Gomes were left out of the 18 man squad, and Parejo is being rested, Nuno made the most of what he had. But we really needed that creative player in midfield.

In terms of tactics, the only different thing was the unusual amount of long balls today. It definitely adds a different dimension to the attack but at points it felt like it was depended on too much and was  more of an act of desperation. Let's just say that Nuno is starting to try new things rather than sticking to the same thing. Now the challenge is to convert chances and find a combination that works. Espanyol played as a team. There were also times when players were taking their runs to far and choosing to go the distance alone instead of involving others.

Goals:
1-0 Victor Alvarez (18')

Lineups:
RCD Espanyol (1): Pau López, Arbilla, Álvaro, Enzo Roco, Duarte, Cañas, Víctor Sánchez (Diop, m. 88), Hernán Pérez, Víctor Álvarez (Burgui, m. 70), Asensio (Gerard Moreno, m. 75) and Caicedo.

Valencia CF (0): Doménech, Joao Cancelo, Santos, Abdenour, Gayà (Feghouli, m. 61), Javi Fuego, Danilo, Enzo Pérez, Bakkali (Piatti, m. 65), Santi Mina (Alcácer, m. 65) and Rodrigo

Player Ratings:
Domenech 6 - pulled off some key saves that gave Valencia CF a fighting chance and keeping the game within reach.
Cancelo 5 - I feel Cancelo is a lot more reserved in his play nowadays, he stopped going on those exciting runs but a postitive that came from that is that he's involved more in defence. Still working on a proper balance.
Abdennour 5.5 - His presence in open play is undeniable. He clears the ball well and makes good challenges. Next step would be to work on set pieces, he needs to be a commanding presence in both penalty areas.
Santos 5 -  decent start, definitely needs time to get used to the team and had one crucial challenge that stopped Asenjo from scoring. Again, both attacking and defending set pieces needs to be involved more.
Gaya 5 - active down the left, decent performance but we've come to expect more from him. Injury will be a tough blow to deal with as it seems Orban is not as trusted by Nuno this season.
Fuego 4.5 - the captain for the night did most of what he was required to do but failed to break up play when Espanyol came on the counter.
Enzo 5.5 - this is a very promising game from him, caused havoc in the first half but slowly faded away in the second.
Danilo Barbosa 5 - I honestly don't have much to say about his play, can't think of anything good or bad he did.
Santi Mina 4.5 - Didn't do enough for me, was in position to recieve the ball a lot of the time but couldn't do anything with it.
Rodrigo 4.5 - He was really active and had some sporadic periods of good linkup play but that 1 v 1 chance is a bigg err in his performance.
Bakkali 6 - Most involved player and caused danger to Espanyol many times. Really unpredictable to defend, can cut in well, blistering pace and a good shot on him.

Subs:
Alcacer N/A - didn't have much of a chance to be judged
Feghouli 5 - okay he had plenty of time to be judged but once Piatti came on, and Rodrigo already there, he seemed confused as to where he's supposed to go or what he's suppposed to do.
Piatti 4.5 - lost the ball and several times in the short period of time he was on, gave the ball away when we really couldn't afford to do so.

Final Comments: Alright Valencianistas, we're on the verge of a crisis in form (some of you will say it already happened but I believe it could still be avoided). Lots of teams in Europe have started off on the wrong foot and managed to fix it but we're about to enter a period where things could get out of hand. Losses and draws will decrease morale which will put more pressure on the coach and players which will decrease morale further causing more losses and draws, etc over and over. I mentioned momentum last report and this will be important. Momentum is built with smaller opposition so that it becomes a good weapon against bigger teams. This weekend against Granada at home will mark one of the last chances to build momentum beyond which opposition gets tougher. Lyon then Bilbao then Malaga then Gent then Atletico Madrid. Even though it's one game, every bit of momentum helps. Granada is also on bad form, they've lost all but one of their games home and away by 2 or more goals. At the end of last season, we beat them 4-0 at Mestalla. I believe the fans could turn this around at Mestalla. If the crowd backs the team from the beginning and they win, it will be a big boost in confidence. If the crowd jeer and and ask Nuno to leave from the very beginning it could be very tense which isn't favorable. I hope its the former option that crowd chooses cause the team needs all of us to back it at this critical point.

RCD Espanyol vs Valencia CF Match Preview

RCD Espanyol vs Valencia CF Match Preview
Stadium: Cornella-El Prat
Date: 22.09.2015 20:00 CET
5th matchday, La Liga
Coaches: Sergio González and Nuno Santo

It hasn't even been two days after the last match and Valencia CF already have to face RCD Espanyol at the Cornella-El Prat in what is expected to be yet another tough match.

Valencia CF last match was against the newly promoted Real Betis side at the Mestalla stadium and everyone expected a routine win for Valencia CF, unfortunately the team managed to stumble even against a 10 man Real Betis side for most of the second half and only end the match in a disappointing 0-0 draw.

The fans in Spain and international fans are getting frustrated and rightfully so, Valencia CF played 4 La Liga matches against weaker opponents, opponents who are just coming to the 1st division and only managed to win once, drawing three times. This time last year Valencia CF were on a roll, winning games left and right with 3 goals scored per match.

That said its still only four matches in the Spanish league, I bet the 3-2 loss to FC Zenit is playing a big part in the frustrations as well, since that was another loss at home in what is considered a pretty weak group overall, compared to the other Champions League groups. So combined together with the domestic and Uefa league Valencia CF is not doing all that well and its creating a frustration among fans.

Personally I'm not worried YET, I've seen a lot of games, I've watched the team for lots of seasons to know better than to panic or get frustrated so early on, there is still plenty of time and opportunity for the team go bounce back and start getting the necessary results. With that out of the way, it could become critical if the team doesn't bounce back soon though, today is the 5th matchday in La Liga and 5 days later its the second match in the Champions league, these two matches will be crucial and Nuno Santo has to win in at least one to avoid a major crisis. Personally I'd wait how we do up until the 7th or 8th match in the Spanish league and probably the 3rd Champions league match and draw solid conclussions backed by facts from there.

Valencia CF coach Nuno Santo stated that he wants to continue with good defensive showings, he said his goal in this match is to not concede, so keeping with the objectives from the previous match, but this time he's said he wants more lethality in front of goal.

The squad list has also shrunk with several of the players being given a break, while others are out due to supposedly small injuries.

Valencia CF Squad:
Goalkeepers: Doménech, Yoel
Defenders: Cancelo, Barragán, Abdennour, Santos, Gayà
Midfielders: Javi Fuego, Danilo, Enzo Pérez, Parejo, Piatti, Bakkali, Feghouli
Forwards: Rodrigo, Santi Mina, Negredo, Paco Alcácer

Technical Details Valencia CF (probable setups):
Formation: 4-4-2
Line-up: Jaume; Cancelo, Santos, Aymen, Gaya; Bakkali, Danilo, Enzo, Piatti; Negredo, Moreno.
Tactics: Medium defensive line, own half pressure, short passing, counter attacks, steep crosses.

Match Prediction:
RCD Espanyol 0-1 Valencia CF
I've been so wrong in my predictions this season that I don't really know what to predict anymore. Against Betis I predicted 3-0 win and got 0-0 draw, against FC zenit I predicted a 2-1 win and got 3-2 loss, Gijon I predicted a 2-0 win and got it partially right with a 1-0 win, before that got it wrong again against Deportivo, etc...
So I'm just going to go with a conservative prediction, one based on how we've played so far in the season, one based more on reality, rather than the more hopeful and enthusiastic predictions I've had.

I'm expecting another absurdly tough match again, I don't think RCD Espanyol are that good of a team this season, they've certainly conceded their fair share of goals and haven't scored much either, but with Valencia's poor scoring form and just lack of results so far I'd say we'd probably scrap away a minimal 1-0 win.

Valencia CF 0 - 0 Real Betis Match Report

Valencia CF end the home game against Betis with the third draw of the league. At this point, the fans are beginning to vent their anger and most of the criticism is going towards Nuno. The fans have already been booing him before this game. Most notable is when brings on Alcacer for Negredo, not because they hate Alcacer or like Negredo more, but they would rather see them both on in games where we need a goal. Do they have a point in criticizing the team? In my opinion, yes, and here's why. So far in the league we've only played against lower table teams with Rayo being the toughest among the games that followed vs Deportivo, and newly promoted Gijon and Betis. It is a bit worrying seeing that we can't manage wins against lower table teams when we're a Champions League level team this year and after the huge investment in the squad. So are they right in asking Nuno to quit? Absolutely not. I believe its way too early for this thought to come up. It's true that the level of our play should be much higher but it's also the first year in a while that we're juggling three competitions at once. Maybe there just needs to be time to get accustomed to the schedule. It should be said that Nuno was said to have made getting a clean sheet his priority this game after receiving 3 goals at home against Zenit. I don't know if that helps his case or not. I mean a clean sheet against Betis should be a step towards the ultimate priority which is winning the game and not shouldn't exceed that in importance.

That being said we have two more games against Espanyol midweek and then against Granada where we need to pick up the pace and momentum before the Champions League game against Lyon. Beyond that, we'll start facing tougher opponents in the League and we have to be prepared for that.

Valencia CF were the dominant side throughout the game, having most of the possession and creating most of the chances. However, the play in general was sloppy. We're at the stage again, where even the basics of the game are suffering. Lots of misplaced passes, rushed crosses and shots and just hoping for the best. I mean this stuff should be taken for granted and the focus should be on the tactics during training; but if the team is struggling with the basics it really should be reinforced in training. These basics of the game are essential for any tactic to be effective. You can have the most brilliant tactics in the world but if the execution is sloppy, they won't do any good.

As far as players go, Feghouli was the most lively by far. He was really trying to create something for the team and was great to watch. Orban who was brought in for this game was also very active and made good runs on the left. When it came to crosses into the box though, the crosses from the left wing especially it felt like they were just kicking the ball without effort or patient to make a good cross, in other words they were just hoping that the ball found somone instead of taking the time and guaranteeing they make the right cross. Another mention has to go to Alcacer for this game. There were moments were he was making such great passes to set up his team mates in good positions. The one moment that comes to mind is where he chipped the ball over the defence to find Rodrigo in a good position. Again, it wasn't to be and nothing came of the chance. It seems to me from this that it is very possible to play with two strikers if Alcacer has that ability.

The second half started with the expulsion of Dani Cabellos due to recieveing his second yellow card after a foul on Rodrigo. We played a full half against a 10- man Betis but couldn't make the most of it. Bakkali was brought in for Gomes, Rodrigo de Paul for Orban and Santi Mina for Rodrigo. But no matter how many attacks Valencia CF took part in or how much possession, there were not many good chances and when they were they were rushed and nothing came of them. Real Betis had to throw everyone back and waste time as they were hoping for a draw at this point and they got it.

In conclusion, Nuno really needs to cover these basic flaws in the game that will let whichever tactics he's using to be a lot more effective and bring out the true talent and strength of this team. The fans have the right to be disappointed but asking for the extreme and kicking Nuno out won't solve the problem. Any new coach will take time to adapt to the team and the team has to adapt to their new tactics and the overall stability of the team which we longed wished for will shatter. It's true we are financially more stable but if the team itself isn't mentally stable and the coaches and tactics keep changing, then we won't get anywhere.

Lineups:

Valencia CF (0): Doménech, Barragán, Mustafi, Abdennour, Orban (De Paul, m. 65), Javi Fuego, Dani Parejo, André Gomes (Bakkali, m. 46), Feghouli, Paco Alcácer and Rodrigo (Santi Mina, m. 83).

Real. Betis (0): Adán, Molinero, Bruno, Westermann, Vargas, Joaquín (Rennella, m. 67), N'Diaye, Ceballos, Portillo (Cejudo, m. 58), Rubén Castro and Jorge Molina (Xavi Torres, m. 60).

Ratings

Domenech 5 - Wasn't troubled too much, had nothing to do but collect the remains of the few Betis attacks.
Barragan 5 - Made himself available on the right side to assist Feghouli but most of the time Feghouli opted to go the distanced by himself. His few crosses weren't effective.
Mustafi 5.5 - Starting to gel with Abdennour. Prevented any real threat from Betis in the first half and comfortably dealt with the few attacks they had on the break in the second half.
Abendennour 5.5 - Fills the gap left by Otamendi quite well, his physicality was crucial to stopping some efforts and disarming Betis player of the ball.
Orban 5.5 - Very active down the left hand side when he's usually a more defensively oriented player. It added an extra option in attack but again crosses weren't effective and the runs didn't translate to anything.
Javi Fuego 6 - His performance has improved a lot this year over last and his experience shows at times. Great interceptions, breaking up play and effective tackling make him a real anchor in this team.
Parejo 4.5 - One of the biggest disappointments for me this season was his play. Lots of misplaced passes and still missing the key pass that unlock defences.
Andre Gomes 5 -  He brings much needed creativity to the team with his quick feet and runs but his decision making needs work to make the most of that creativity.
Feghouli 6 - Most of the danger came through him, his decision making whether to cross or continue his run is spot on most of the time. His crossing is the most effective but if he can work on it more, he would be lethal.
Alcacer 5.5 - Great link up play setting up his team mates. Starting to involve himself in build up more rather than just waiting for the ball at the front. Learning from Negredo?
Rodrigo 4 - Forgive me Rodrigo fans out there but this is nowhere near the performance a 30+ million euro player should be playing at. Passes weren't only misplaced they were horribly misplaced. The few chances we had fell the him but he couldn't make the most of it.

Subs:
Bakkali 5.5 - deserves to start more. More effective than Piatti and Rodrigo in this position so far this season. Very promising and with more game time should be lethal.
Rodrigo de Paul 5 - added more energy to the team but we really needed his creativity to show during those 25 minutes that he was on but it didn't.
Santi Mina N/A - not enough time

Please share your thoughts on this whole fans vs Nuno issue and general thoughts about this game and this season so far below.

Amunt Valencia!

Valencia CF vs Real Betis Match Preview

Valencia CF vs Real Betis Match Preview
Stadium: Mestalla
Date: 19.09.2015 18:15 CET
4th matchday, La Liga
Coaches: Nuno Santo and Pepe Mel

Valencia CF is changing its attention to the Spanish league, after a disappointing loss in the Champions league at the legs of FC Zenit. I'm sure the loss feels even worse considering the team played well, controlled the match and even equalized, but only to concede again and ultimately lose 3-2.

Real Betis have returned to the 1st division in the Spanish league after spending several years in the second division. They are strengthened this season by the arrival of Joaquin Sanchez from Fiorentina, who also in his time played for Valencia CF, before being sold to Malaga several years back.

Another recognizable name is Rafael van der Vart who joined them this season from Hamburger SV on a free transfer.

Overall they've had quite a number of changes to their squad, with couple dozen of players arriving and leaving their squad. Judging from their past 3 matches they are an okay team, certainly likely to be fighting to avoid relegation, I don't see them finishing in the middle of the table, but anything is certainly possible.

As far as Valencia CF is concerned the team will be looking to win this match, anything else will be a major, major disappointment. This is a must win match, especially at home in the Mestalla. Nuno Santo talked at the press conference that he wants the team to be more solid defensively and that apart from winning tomorrow he expects the team to keep a clean sheet. Great objectives, lets see if the team can achieve them.

With the team only having few days rest after the Champions league match its most likely that Valencia CF coach Nuno Santo will give some of the reserve players some playing time and change up the team considerably from the previous match. The only thing that will likely stay the same will be the central defense of Mustafi and Aymen, since Nuno would like them to gel nicely so that the team is better defensively.

Valencia CF Squad:
Goalkeepers: Doménech, Yoel
Defenders: Cancelo, Barragán, Vezo, Mustafi, Abdennour, Santos, Gayà, Orban
Midfielders: Javi Fuego, Danilo, Enzo Pérez, Parejo, Piatti, Bakkali, Feghouli, André Gomes, De Paul
Forwards: Rodrigo, Santi Mina, Negredo, Paco Alcácer

Technical Details Valencia CF (probable setups):
Formation: 4-2-1-3
Line-up: Jaume; Barragan, Mustafi, Aymen, Gaya; Parejo, Danilo; De Paul; Moreno, Paco, Bakkali.
Tactics: High defensive line, all round pressure, mixed passing, counter attacks, attacking triangle.

Match Result:
Valencia CF 3-0 Real Betis
All of the matches this season have been won through the grinding of the teeth, Valencia CF haven't had any match that they've comfortably won, in fact apart from the win at the Mestalla against AS Monaco and the last minute win against Sporting Gijon the team hasn't had many win at all.

So I'm expecting to finally see a good result, I'm finally expecting a comfortable win and if we don't get it I'll be seriously questioning the strength of the team. At the very least VCF should be able to win 2-0 against Real Betis.

Volkswagen new Valencia CF sponsor

Valencia CF have signed a new sponsorship deal with Germany's car manufacturer Volkswagen for the the 2015/16 season. The agreement was made official in a ceremony held at Valencia attended by Laura Ros, CEO of Volkswagen Spain, and Layhoon Chan, Chairwoman of Valencia CF.

This does not to seem to be a main sponsorship deal though, which means Volkswagen are not paying huge amounts and the deal in mostly for the advertisement at the stadium.

We'll see, but from what I'm noticing it seems to not be the sort of main shirt sponsor type deal. Either way this is good news, as it means more money for Valencia CF and some decent exposure for Volkswagen now that Valencia CF is in the Champions league!

Valencia CF 2-3 FC Zenit Match Report

Valencia CF suffered a devastating defeat at home against guests FC Zenit, in a match that was a must win for us. If we can't win at home at the Mestalla, the away trips are going to be even tougher and this might be an intro into what is to come for us.

Overall the team didn't play bad, sure the chances were hard to come by and the team was mostly relegated to try long range crosses and that didn't work with only Negredo and occasionally Piatti in the penalty area against 4 or 5 defenders there. This was pretty much the first half of the match, Valencia CF the possession, had the control, were the ones attacking and it was on counter attacks that FC Zenit exposed our defense and managed to capitalize on individual mistakes.

The first goal shouldn't have happened if Fuego was positioned better, he wasn't positioned next to Danny and had to run towards him from behind, by which time he passed the ball to Hulk who was also left with plenty of space to have a clear shot on goal. Joan Cancelo was too slow to close him down, allowed a shot to happen and Hulk scored. It didn't help that Jaume wasn't positioned perfectly, if Diego Alves was on goal I have no doubt he would have saved that shot and prevented a goal.

So clearly individual mistakes happening, even though the team was playing good overall, with chances hard to come by, but FC Zenit were defending good, they positioned themselves great and we couldn't really penetrate them. It was mostly Sofiane Feghouli that was doing work for us on the left flank, he was putting in cross after cross, pass after pass, but no one was there on the end of it.

Just before half time, another counter attack by FC Zenit and another goal. They literally had 2 chances and scored two goals. Once again I didn't like Javi Fuego position, he was way too forward and couldn't block the attack before it happened. This left Mustafi and Cancelo exposed and once again Cancelo failing to properly close down Hulk, he just allowed him plenty of space once again, and once again his shot ended up in the net. As with the first goal, the same mistakes for the second goal and it didn't help that Jaume was too weak to block the shot. Once again it was a savable shot, yes it was a powerful shot and yes it shouldn't have happened in the first place if Fuego and Cancelo had played well, but if we had Diego Alves or even Ryan the shot might have been blocked, it was a great shot, but one that was savable by a top tier goalkeeper.

So Valencia CF controlled the match, the possession, there were some penetrating runs as well, some crosses, Piatti and Parejo had opportunities to score, it wasn't like the team was playing bad overall.

The second half Nuno made 2 changes from the start, he brought in Gomes and Paco in place of Fuego and Piatti and instantly Paco Alcacer scored a goal, unfortunately the goal was disallowed.

With Andre Gomes on we had more chances, the team played more offensively and we actually saw the Jose Luis Gaya that we know and want, a player who bombarded on that left flank, time and time again he was doing work on that left flank and providing crosses, passes, link-up play with Gomes and really causing trouble for the Zenit defense.

It would be in the 51st minute when Valencia CF would score a goal, Joao Cancelo foung himself in open space, ran from the wing towards the goal and what seemed to be an intention of cross, ended up being a shot. Personally I didn't see anyone really deflect the shot, so I'm giving this one as a goal for Cancelo, rather than an own goal.

Valencia CF had few more opportunities as well, several near misses, some decent crosses that could have resulted in goals with maybe better positioning in attack and overall just all out attacking to try and equalize the score. Thankfully Valencia CF ended up equalizing the score, it was Andre Gomes with the goal after some good footwork to get past his market and shot a powerful low target shot that beat FC Zenit goalkeeper Yuri. It was good form from Gaya as well who provided him with the assist.

Unfortunately with the hysteria of having equalized and desperately wanting to still score, the team played too forward, they didn't slow down the game, they didn't reorganize having equalized and still having enough time to patiently score another goal, they pushed forward as if we were still trying not to lose and once again FC Zenit caught them off guard. It was another counter attack, with Aymen covering in the midfield, meaning there was no one left to cover from hi, Gaya was still running back from attack, Enzo was positioned too centrally and I think it was Parejo who ended up covering in defense, but clearly not properly since Alex Witsel made it 3-2 for Zenit.

Once again a counter attack, once again a long range shot that ended up in the net. I hate to say it, but where was Jaume this time as well? I can't blame him too much, its clear that his defense failed him big time in all three goals, but he didn't make one single stop, he had to react three times in the whole game and he failed all three times.

It just something that in the back of my head I'm thinking if we had a more experienced goalkeeper in such an important match, we might have not conceded 3 times from 3 chances.

Realistically FC Zenit didn't play at all, they barely had the ball at their feet and most of there attack were stopped dead in their tracks, but the three times they had decent counter attack, they scored three times. With that kind of slack defending we can't expect to win against anyone.

So yeah, the team tried to score another goal till the end, there was also a potential penalty as Cancelo was brought down by a push just on the line of the penalty area, but it wasn't given.

So there you have it, the first match in the Champions league and its a devastating loss and its an even tougher one because the team did play good, the overall play was good, the team did create chances even if they weren't as clear cut as one would like them to be and the players showed strong character to keep fighting being 2 goals down and did manage to come back, did manage to score two goals and equalize, it was all undone and it was all ruined by really poor defending through individual mistakes mostly.

Technical Details:
Valencia CF: Jaume, Cancelo, Mustafi, Abdennour, Gayá, Javi Fuego (Andre Gomes, m. 45), Enzo Pérez, Parejo, Feghouli (Rodrigo, m.71), Piatti (Alcácer, m.45), Negredo.
FC Zenit: Lodygin, Ankuyov (Neto, m.77), Garay, Lombaerts, Criscito, Javi García, Danny, Witsel, Smolnikov (Shatov, m.69), Dzyuba (Fayzulin, m.58), Hulk.

Goals:
Hulk 0-1; 9 min. Assist Danny
Hulk 0-2; 44 min. Assist Artem Dzyuba
Joao Cancelo 1-2; 54 min.
Andre Gomes 2-2; 73 min. Assist Jose Luis Gaya
Alex Witsel 2-3; 76 min. Assist Oleg Shatov

Player Ratings:
Jaume 5 - Not to blame directly for any of the goals, but it seems to me that he could have saved at least one of those goals if he was either better positioned or faster to react. Can't help but think a Diego Alves would have saved at least one of those, if not all three.
Cancelo 5 - Bombarded down the right flank, provided crosses, passes, linked-up well with Feghouli and scored a goal to put Valencia CF back in the game, but his defensive mistakes were huge and can't be overlooked, allowed Hulk too much space twice from which he scored.
Mustafi 5.5 - Made a mess with Cancelo for the second goal, he wasn't covering anyone, just went back deep and left Cancelo to close down Hulk, which obviously backfired.
Aymen 5.5 - Similar performance as Mustafi, had few good tackles to cleanly win back the ball, was forced to get out in midfield to mark a Zenit player, but that left his position exposed and the third Zenit goal happened. Was somewhat questionable position.
Gaya 8 - Now this is the kind of performance I personally expect from Gaya, wasn't too involved in attack in the first half, but kept his flank secured and then just bombarded time and time again in the second half, providing good crosses and passes, linking up really well with Gomes and providing the assist for Gomes second goal.
Fuego 3.5 - Match to forget for him, couldn't shield the defense, was caught out of position time and time again and just slowed down the play in midfield too much and didn't contribute in an offensive manner.
Parejo 6.5 - He is the hearth in midfield, pretty much every forward pass goes through him, always available for a pass, always spreading the ball and pushing the team forward, good individual performance from the captain.
Enzo 5.5 - Was actually really offensive in this match, at least in the first half and ran down the left flank often, combining with Gaya and Piatti, fell back in midfield to receive passes as well and overall good movement. Was suspect defensively in the second half though and was badly positioned to cover in defense for the 3rd Zenti goal.
Feghouli 6.5 - The only player in the first half to truly trouble Zenit, beat his marker often and provided numerous crosses and passes into the penalty area, he did his job as best he could and it was other players fault and tactical error if there are no players in the penalty area to get on a pass or a cross.
Negredo 5 - I'm sure he was bought as a big reinforcement that would guarantee Valencia CF at least one goal per match or at least close to that, but even with improved form this season he is nowhere near the level where the team needs him to be. Was mostly on the periphery of the action.
Piatti 5.5 - Just didn't seem too effectual, went inside the penalty area which I liked and tried to get on to a few crosses and passes, but his small stature worked against him when trying to beat few Zenit defenders. Taken off at half time.
Subs:
Gomes 6.5 - Made a world of difference when he came on in the second half and his direct running and dribbling skills caused a lot of problems for the Zenit defense, in combination with Gaya the left flank became extremely dangerous. Scored a great goal as well.
Paco 5.5 - Made more impact than Negredo, even scored a goal that was disallowed, created more danger in the penalty area and just his presence there allowed other VCF players more space.
Moreno N/A - Not enough time to make any impact, but didn't seem like an improvement over Feghouli from his short time on the field.

Valencia CF vs FC Zenit Match Preview

Valencia CF vs FC Zenit Match Preview
Stadium: Mestalla
Date: 16.09.2015 20:45 CET
1st fixture, Champions League group stage
Coaches: Nuno Santo and André Villas-Boas

After a hard fought victory over Sporting Gijon in the Spanish league, all thanks to a last minute goal by Paco Alcacer, Valencia CF turns its sights over to the Champions league where it will face last season's Russian Premier league champions FC Zenit in the first fixture of group H.

Even though FC Zenit are last season's champions they haven't had the best start to the new season, currently sharing 3rd place on the table with 16 points, 6 points bellow leader CSKA Moscow. More worryingly is that their coach Andre Villas-Boas has announced that he will step down as coach of Zenit St Petersburg at the end of the 2015-16 season. Villas-Boas had previously hinted at a possible exit from Zenit, saying last week that he wanted to leave the club at the end of last season but management would not allow him to go.

Clearly he wasn't happy at the club and wanted to leave, but he's been forced to stay through his contract and surely this must be affecting his work, so it would be interesting to see how they cope in the Champions league.

Valencia CF qualified for the Champions league group stages by beating AS Monaco, who were one of the toughest opponents possible, but with some good play, some luck and AS Monaco selling some of their best players this summer Valencia CF managed to beat them and secure its position in the group stages.
On paper group H is one of the easiest groups, if Valencia CF were choosing their opponents they wouldn't have been able to pick better opponents, but having said that the team must take every opponent seriously and give 100% throughout the full matches in order to win. Taking opponents too lightly or thinking we are already to the last 16 would be a huge mistake and in the Champions league anything can happen and each of the teams have earned their place there.

I'm sure the team is taking FC Zenit seriously though, since its not like they've been winning with ease in La Liga, the team must prove that they are good, that they have enough quality to get through this group and the first step is winning at the Mestalla against FC Zenit. This match is absolutely crucial and securing 3 points would pave the way for us, give the players much needed confidence and moral boost that will enable us to take the upcoming Champions league matches more confidently.

Valencia CF coach Nuno Santo started a strong team against Sporting Gijon in the hopes of securing the first win in La Liga, and while a win was barely secured, that means he has tough choices to make tomorrow of whether to rest some of the players or not.

One option he has is to start De Paul in midfield, but he would have to start over Enzo Perez who also played last match, another option would be starting Moreno in place of Piatti and Paco Alcacer over Negredo. Javi Fuego is almost certain to play, since I don't think he'll risk playing the inexperienced Danilo, the defense would probably be the same, with the exception of Cancelo, who might be replaced by Barragan. It will also be interesting to see if he plays Andre Gomes in the starting eleven, he did well when coming on last match, but is he fully match fit and can he last 90 minutes?

Valencia CF Squad:
Goalkeepers: Yoel, Jaume Doménech,
Defenders: Cancelo, Barragán, Vezo, Abdennour, Mustafi, Santos, Orban, Gayà
Midfielders: Enzo Pérez, Javi Fuego, Danilo, André Gomes, Parejo, Piatti, Feghouli, De Paul
Forwards: Rodrigo, Santi Mina, Negredo, Paco Alcácer

Technical Details Valencia CF (probable setups):
Formation: 4-3-3
Line-up: Jaume; Barragan, Mustafi, Aymen, Gaya; Fuego, Parejo, Enzo; Moreno, Feghouli, Paco.
Tactics: High defensive line, own half round pressure, mixed passing, counter attacks, doubling down in attack.

Match Result:
Valencia CF 2-1 FC Zenit
Valencia CF haven't looked too comfortable at the back this season and while I'm sure Aymen will provide more stability once he establishes an understanding with the other defenders, this isn't going to happen overnight and will require some time, so I'm expecting Valencia CF to concede a goal, probably from set piece of some sort of chaotic situation in the penalty area, but I'm also expecting to score twice this match and win two to one.

I realize we haven't been scoring much at all, but I think the team can muster up two goals, especially if we are accurate in front of goal and take our chances. Last season Valencia CF had the most goals scored from the least chances, it wasn't that we were creating more chances, it was that we would create 3 chances and score from all three, this season Paco Alcacer has started a bit slower, as has Gaya who did provide the majority of assists and crosses this time last season.

So overall FC Zenit are a bit weaker than last season, their coach is clearly unhappy and wanted to leave before the start of the new season, so of course that is going to have an effect on their performances and Valencia CF should be good enough to be able to win at home against FC Zenit.

Chelsea FC want Jose Luis Gaya

Chelsea FC interested in Jose Luis Gaya
Chelsea FC manager Jose Mourinho is desperate to sign few key players in the winter transfer window, including a central defender and a left back and he's identified Valencia's Jose Luis Gaya as the perfect reinforcement on that left defensive position.

Another target of Jose Mourino is John Stones who he missed out on in the summer, but will double down in his pursuit in the winter and go after Jose Luis Gaya as well, which he sees as the perfect long term solution for that Chelsea FC left back position.

In fact reports suggest that Chelsea FC are willing to bid up to 50 million euros for Jose Gays, who just recently signed a new and improved contract with Valencia CF that will keep him in the club up till 2020 and of course his release clause was significantly increased, thought to be somewhere in the region of 60 million euros.

Chelsea FC are going to have significant competition though as Manchester City, Manchester United and Real Madrid are reported to all want to acquire Gaya's services and they are all willing to dish out huge sums to make it happen.

In fact Real Madrid have identified Jose Luis Gaya as the perfect long term replacement to Marcelo and since they didn't spend too much money in the summer, have acquired a big amount that they will use in order to lure Valencia CF into selling.

Another interested club seems to be Bayern Munich, with Pep Guardiola being a personal huge fan of the talented Gaya, who he sees as an even bigger prospect than Juan Bernat who he purchased from Valencia CF for 10 million euros few years ago.

Jose Luis Gaya was one of the best players last season for Valencia CF, creating numerous chances from that left flank, providing several assists and bombarding the opposition with accurate crosses and passes into their penalty field. So its no surprise that he's garnered the interest from all of the top clubs in the world and his price is sure to skyrocket as we approach the winter transfer market as teams try to acquire his services.

Sporting Gijon 0-1 Valencia CF Match Report

Finally, Valencia's first win in the Spanish league and it was hard fought one, definitely much harder than I'd imagined it and basically just in the final minutes of the match, thanks to a Paco Alcacer strike.

The match started as I'd expected with Valencia CF pressuring really high, fighting for every ball, trying to go forward as much as possible and in my preview I wrote that I was expecting a goal in the first 20 minutes after a high energy start, but we didn't get that. In fact Sporting Gijon stood firm and after an initial 10-15 minutes of higher energy play from Valencia CF, the game settled down.

Valencia CF was going forward and the team was attacking, but there were no concise actions, no clear chances. Feghouli and Cancelo were combining well on the right wing, Parejo was playing good and spreading the ball efficiently, but once again Valencia CF lacked that final ball, they lacked cohesion in the final third, there didn't see to be any precise movements there, where we'd significantly threaten Sporting Gijon.

The second half was pretty much same as the first, it was mostly Valencia CF controlling the ball and tempo of the match, with Sporting Gijon having occasional counter attack and sporadic attacks. Unfortunately we weren't doing much with the ball at our feet, I can't say Negredo had some clear cut chance to be able to score from and there was a lack of players in the final third, once again I felt Enzo Perez played too defensively in the first and in the second half, he was better in the second half, but still not good enough. He did have one great cross to Parejo, who's volley barely missed, it hid the crossbar and went out.

Nuno Santo brought in Ander Gomes for the ineffective Enzo Perez and you could clearly see a bit of more urgency in the play, Andre Gomes is a more direct and attacking players, so he wasn't afraid to dribble and try the risky pass, which at that point Valencia CF desperately needed. Even with Gomes on and playing rather good, considering this is his first game after over 3 months on injury the team couldn't find that final pass, a good chance to score.

In fact it was Sporting Gijon that came closest to winning, all within one action, a shot forced goalkeeper Jaume to save, but the rebound fell right to a Gijon player, his shot was once again saved by Jaume and once again the rebound ended up again to a Sporting Gijon player, forcing Jaume into a third save. Valencia CF was lucky not to concede there and it was quite a bit of slack defending, we were fortunate to keep the scoreless draw there.

Anyways Paco Alcacer would end up making the difference in the final moments of the match, Valencia CF were attacking as much as possibly in the final minutes, with Paco also having a fair chance earlier as well, but it was in the 92nd minute after a shot from Feghouli was blocked, making the ball fly on the left side to I believe it was Bakkali who's cross was headed into the net by Paco Alcacer to make it 1-0 for Valencia CF.

Just in the last second of the match Valencia CF would have a scare in front of goal, as the ball kind of casually walked in the penalty area reaching an unmarked Gijon player, but fortunately he kind of decided to position himself a bit too much, then dribble past Cancelo and ultimately the chance was ruined.

It was a hard fought victory for Valencia CF, but a win nonetheless, with Valencia CF sporting 5 points now from 3 matches and finally entering the competition for the top spots.

Player Ratings:
Jaume 8.5 - Wasn't troubled for most of the match, but did have to have several saves in a span of just seconds to keep Valencia CF in the match, had several crucial saves, in what was in general a calm match for him for 89 minutes.
Cancelo 6.5 - He had a good game, wasn't troubled a lot at the back and went forward often, linked up well enough with Feghouli.
Mustafi 6 - Decent game, can't fault him directly for any of the Gijon chances, it was usually a chaos type situation in the penalty area.
Aymen 6 - Was watching him closely since its his first game and came in as a big reinforcement, he did well, had some good interceptions, good one on one, though a bit suspect positioning at times, I guess he still needs to form a better understanding with his team mates and for the coach tactics.
Gaya 6.5 - Similar performance to Cancelo just on the left side, this time last year he was playing superbly and providing assists left and right, but this season he's started slower, I'd expect him to have at least one more level of better performances in the future.
Fuego 5.5 - Wasn't troubled much at the back, but he did seem to find himself watching in some of the Gijon attacks.
Enzo Perez 5 - Don't know if this is tactical issue or if he just doesn't know his role, but he seems way too defensive to me. Was more attack oriented in the second half, but really needs to do more in an attacking sense.
Parejo 6.5 - The only real player in midfield that actually did stuff, provided passes, was a good outlet in midfield, went forward, went back, seemed to only one playing in midfield.
Feghouli 6.5 - Seemed eager to get forward and as always he is full of running, provided some decent crosses and passes in the penalty area and caused trouble for Gijon's defense.
Negredo 5.5 - Not quite the performance from previous games, though didn't have much service.
Piatti 5.5 - Had a good chance to score a goal, but his shot was wide, other than that he didn't provide too much.
Subs:
Gomes 6 - Provided a much needed direct running and brought a fresh energy to the team, created quite a bit of attacks and was active when he came on.
Paco 6.5 - Had one chance to score a goal, but wasn't quite accurate and then headed home a goal to give Valencia CF the win in the final moments of the match.
Bakkali 6.5 - Not enough time to really give a score, but he did provide the assist for the goal and was really active in his short time on the field, so I'm giving him a 6.5

Sporting Gijon vs Valencia CF Match Preview
Stadium: El Molinón
Date: 12.09.2015 18:15 CET
3rd matchday, La Liga
Coaches: Abelardo Fernández and Nuno Santo

The international fixtures are over and we are back to club football again, with Valencia CF traveling to El Molinon in the 3rd round of the Spanish league.

I wrote an article how the international break would benefit Valencia CF and it time to find out if I was right or not, and not to brag, but I'm rarely wrong about those types of things.

We saw Paco Alcacer play for Spain, he had two relatively short cameos as a sub,  but he was lively in his time on the pitch and seemed way more likely to score than Diego Costa, in fact he did score, but unfortunately his goal was deemed offside. I think he'd be better off now, since I think he's got his competitive spirit back.

Shkodran Mustafi unfortunately did not feature for Germany, Aymen Abdennour and Jose Luis Gaya did feature for their respective national teams, with Gaya scoring a crucial goal for Spain U-21 squad and giving them the lead.

With the two week break, it has allowed Andre Gomes to recover from his injury and be fit enough to be featured in the squad against Sporting Gijon for the first time this season, after over 3 months of injury!

Anotnio Barragan is out of the squad due to his red card in the previous match, while Ruben Vezo isn't listed either, which as of now I'm thinking probably some small injury, this means that we'll see either Aymen Abdennour or Aderlan Santos featuring for the first time, after the late transfer market purchases to strengthen our defense. Judging from the training sessions Nuno is likely going to start with Aymen Abdennour and Shkodran Mustafi as the central duo.

With Mathew Ryan also injured for at least 1 more week, most likely two, we are going to see either Yoel or Jaume feature in front of goal, with Yoel probably going go get the spot.

There is a champions league game just 4 days later, so while I do think Nuno is going to play the strongest team since Valencia CF desperately need the 3 points, it will be interesting who exactly gets to feature and who is going to be saved for the Champions league match.

Valencia CF squad:
Goalkeepers: Yoel, Jaume Doménech
Defenders: Cancelo, Mustafi, Abdennour, Santos, Orban, Gayà
Midfielders: Javi Fuego, Enzo Pérez, André Gomes, Parejo, Piatti, Bakkali, Feghouli, De Paul
Forwards: Rodrigo, Negredo, Paco Alcácer

Technical Details Valencia CF (probable setups):
Formation: 4-2-1-3
Line-up: Yoel; Cancelo, Mustafi, Aymen, Gaya; Parejo, Enzo; De Paul; Feghouli, Negredo, Moreno.
Tactics: High defensive line, all round pressure, mixed passing, counter attacks, attacking square.

Match Result:
Sporting Gijon 0-2 Valencia CF
If I was a betting man I'd put my money on Valencia CF winning and I'm thinking probably 2-0 over Gijon, the team has had full two weeks to get ready, the new arrivals have had time to gel better, as I've said I think the international duty has benefited the team, the players and I expect Valencia CF to come out swinging from the first minute. I'm expecting an early goal, within 20 minutes at most and then comfortably winning by 2-0.
