Rayo Vallecano 1-1 Valencia CF La Liga 30th April 2015

Usually I like to chill out a bit after watching the game and write it up after reflection, however needs must means it is now or never. So Rayo win the toss of the coin and choose the end for their keeper that is not still in the sun.  Usually not an important issue, I say usually.
Valencia go on the attack right from the kick off and unlike previous games recently look really lively and batter away at the Rayo defence.  It would be no exaggeration to say we should have had 3 goals in the first 10 minutes.  Time after time the Rayo goal was threatened but time after time shots went wide or were miss kicked.  Negredo and Piatti were in the starting eleven giving a change look and it seemed to be working well with Rodrigo on the right flank looking really dangerous cutting in on his favoured left foot.  However the unbelievable happened on the 19th  minute when a harmless looking shot from Embarba  looked to be an easy catch for Alves but with the sun in his eyes he allowed the ball to squirm through his hands for the easiest goal Rayo will score in many seasons.
This understandably seemed to rattle  Valencia and for a while the passes were going astray and players were being caught in possession.
Eventually though Valencia started to find the form that has taken us to the top part of the league and the difference in class began to tell.  The game could not be criticized for incident and excitement with both teams going all out for the three points.
In the second half Feghouli replaces Piatti  and things would take a turn for the better in the 62nd minute for Valencia when Morcillo was sent off for taking the legs away from Andre Gomez when he was clean through on goal to give Valencia a free kick on the edge of the area.  The way the game had gone for us Gomez would probably not have scored anyway so the free kick was welcome. Danny Parejo steps up though and blasts the ball through the wall to put the game back on level terms 4 minutes later. Game on now.
Valencia continued to dominate but it was not all one way and the home team had a few opportunities. Parejo was then unlucky when his low shot hits the bottom of the post and bounces off the keeper for a corner.  In the 70th minute Parejo replaces the injured Mustafi to partner Negredo up front.  Then it was the turn for Rodrigo to come to the attention of the referee.  After clattering with the keeper and being elbowed in the face he decides to trip him up. The foul looked hardly deserving of a red but that was what he got. Disappointing as this ref, I have noticed is very lenient in letting play continue without using cards but on this occasion again we seem to get the harsh decision when he could have also sent off the keeper.
In the final stages Valencia continued to attack but the home team held out for a point and it was the home fans whistling for the final whistle to be blown as they knew they were fortunate to earn anything from the game.

Conclusion   A really entertaining game but a disappointing final result. Still leaves us 4th above Sevilla on goal difference

Player Ratings

Alves   6    Unfortunate with the slip that ultimately cost the points but made a good save to keep us level
Barragan  6.5 Showing signs of improvement and stability
Mustafi  6.5   Picked up an injury but looked solid when called on
Otamendi  6.5 His usual solid self and made some telling tackles
Gaya  6.5  Relatively quiet game and seems to have things on his mind
Perez   6.0   Really quiet game tonight
Gomes    Earned the free kick for the goal but not at his best
Piatti   6.0   Needs to get his sharpness and fitness back
Parejo  7.0  Good game tonight and was the most busy in the midfield and took his goal well and unlucky when he hit the post
Negredo 6.5  Missed some good chances early on and faded a bit in the second half. But at times showed his class.
Rodrigo 7.0  Really lively in the first half and unlucky a few times, but we say that every week

Subs

Valencia 4 - 0 Granada La Liga 27th April 2015

There has been much talk recently about the need for the strikers to start getting a few more goals and tonight partly answered the question.
The game started similar to recent games for Valencia with a patchy start and it was taking a while for them to find any sort of rhythm. This was partly due to their lack of ideas but mainly due to Granada getting players behind the ball in large numbers.  The deadlock, however was broken in the 25th  minute when a corner on the right was taken by Parejo and his deep cross found Javi Fuego rise through a bunch of players to put the home side in front.  This should have been the signal for Valencia to go an and crush Granada but they were still finding chances hard to come by.  However just before the half time whistle Barragan broke through on the right but his run was blocked in the penalty area.  The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot to give Valencia the opportunity to increase their lead. Parejo had said before the game that in the event of us getting a penalty he would have no hesitation of stepping forward.  True to his word he stepped forward and fired the ball to the keepers right to banish last weeks miss at the Camp Nou.
No changes at half time but Valencia were looking a little more composed with the two goal cushion.
Andre Gomes was replaced at 63 minutes by Enzo Perez presumably to rest him for the upcoming games. Perez soon showed why he is so highly rated playing in a more forward attacking roll and looking very lively. Then it was the time for the lacklustre Rodrigo to be replaced by De Paul, who was soon looking lively on the left side. Negredo replaced Alcacer on the 69th minute.  Valencia were slowing the pace now naturally with important games coming up and just when we thought we were going to have to accept the 2.0 Negredo slipped a great ball through to Feghouli to blast the ball into the net to make it 3.0. Negredo may have been criticised for not scoring enough but giving passes like these to others proves his worth to the team.  Just to round off a great night for him and Valencia.  In the 89th minute  De Paul floated over a pinpoint cross for Negredo to power a header past the keeper to round off a very successful evening to put us back to fourth place and keep us on track for Champions League. It was good to see Negredo celebrating his goal by running and sliding across the pitch on his knees. It was more of joy than relief and seems to be back on top form.

Player Ratings

Alves  7.0  Always difficult to rate him in these type of games when he spent most of the game watching and was barely needed.
Barragan  7.0  Has never been my favourite player but showed again tonight why Nuno has kept faith in him and kept and left Cancelo on the bench. did well to win the penalty.
Mustafi 7.5  What can you say about him, he is just so boringly good and efficient and again hardly put a foot wrong.
Otamendi 7.5   Just like Mustafi seems to get better every game and made some great challenges. He is such an important part of the team and the future of V.C.F.
Gaya 7.5   Good to see him back, had some great runs and always looked confident in his defensive duties.
Fuego 7.0  Had another good game and crowned an effective performance with an important goal. Always reliable without being outstanding.
Gomes 7.5  He ran the game from midfield together with Parejo and answered early season doubts about whether the two could play together.
Parejo 7.5  Forming a great midfield partnership with Gomes now and took his penalty well. Was unlucky with a good glancing header in the first half.
Feghouli  8.0  I am going to give him top marks for his efforts, his great runs, his work rate right up to the final whistle and of course his great goal.
Rodrigo 5.5  To me the disappointment of the night. From the first whistle nothing seemed to go right for him and should have crossed instead of shooting from a wide angle when given the opportunity. Has to improve a lot or will see De Paul take his place.
Alcacer 6.5  For all his work rate was largely ineffective tonight. Partly due to lack of service to him from midfield but great goalscorers are expected to make their own goals and it just isn't happening.

Subs
Perez 7.0  Looked really good when he came on and must surely be a starter again soon
De Paul 6.5  Showed again tonight that he is a very strong and skillful player, set up the 4th goal
Negredo 7.5  Only on for a short time but made a great pass for Feghouli to score and capped a great night by getting one himself.  I predict the goals and assists will now be more regular and could be the key to our future next season.

Where Are They Now and Are They Coming Back?

Vinicius Araujo
On loan at Standard Liege in Belgium until June 2015 having signed for them on a 12 month load period.  He was bought by Valencia from Cruziero in Brazil for a reputed 3.5 million euros, with Valencia owning half the rights but was not used  very often and was only seen few a few minutes at the end of games.
To me he looked very slow and heavy footed having come with very high hopes from Brazil.  He failed to score for us and is having a tough time now at Standard Liege having the same problems of not being played and coming on late.  At one time he was top scorer for the Brazil U/20s  but his career seems to have stalled at the moment.  he is on contract with us until the summer 2019 so it remains to be seen where he will go next season.  I think the chances of him coming back right now and being part of the squad are very slim.

Robert Ibanez
Currently on loan at Granada. Has scored 4 goals for them this season since he went there in January of this year. He seems to be fulfilling his expectations and looks a great prospect. He is due to return to Valencia in the summer and is contracted to us until 2018. A decision has to be taken then as to whether his loan will be extended which is unlikely as it looks as if Granada could well be playing in Segunda B next season unless they can improve their form. Alternatively in the event of them dropping down he could go elsewhere for a loan period and I am sure there would be no shortage of takers for him. However we cannot discount the fact that it may be felt that he has proved himself in the top league and could return to be part of the squad.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Fede Cartabria
On loan at Cordoba until the end of the season 2015.  Contracted to Valencia until 2017.  Seems to be revitalised getting away from Valencia and playing more regularly.  His game certainly seems to have improved with the added responsibility of being their main playmaker at times. Great at taking free kicks and drawing fouls with his mazy runs.  Still seems to have a temperament problem though and seems to attract too many yellow cards from the referee. Although who are we to critcise that as we have enough players who seem to be doing the same thing. I think his decision making has improved somewhat but can still see some of the old bad things creeping in at times.

The season away will have been really good for him and the club and again a decision needs to be made on his future.  We have  the same dilemma with Fede as Cordoba appear to be doomed to relegation and he certainly will not be staying with them after the summer.  So what happens,  we sell,  we loan out again ?  We will wait and see.

Victor Ruiz
On loan at Villareal until the end of this season with an option to buy for 4 million euros. he is on contract to Valencia until summer 2016.
He has had a really good season with Villareal and it remains to be seen as to whether they will buy him.  I think the chances are that they will take up the offer considering the number of games he has played this term with a team that has until recently been challenging us near the top end of the table.  I don't see him coming back to play for us despite his improvement in form due to the opportunities he has had to prove his capabilities.  Is he a player we have let slip away ?  Time will tell but with our increased finances now maybe it is best for both parties.

Barcelona 2-0 Valencia La Liga 18/4/2015

There was much talk before the game that Valencia could win this one and cause an upset and for long spells during the game that certainly seemed a possibility.  However if you are going to win at Barcelona you do not give away a goal in the first minute.  All looked fine with a Valencia attack down the right and a cross from Feghouli which almost reached the oncoming Alcacer but the ball was cut out and Barca swiflty countered.  The ball was played to Messi who calmly slotted it to Saurez on the right and he easily beat Alves at the far post. Arguably Orban may have been a little more quicker off the mark but he lost his footing and that was all that was needed for the home team to take advantage.  OK, we are thinking, are heads going to drop and are we in for an embarrassing afternoon ?  The answer to that question was soon answered with Valencia picking themselves up and going straight back at them.
Barcelona were looking really rattled and chance after chance came for the visitors.  But for a little bad fortune and bad finishing something positive could have come from the pressure.  However in the 8th minute an opportunity arose when Rodrigo was floored from behind by Pique and the referee rightly pointed to the penalty spot. Captain Parejo stepped up and placed the ball to Bravo's right but the keeper guessed the right way and saved quite easily.  A chanced missed but it did not deter Valencia and they had the better of the play in the first half and Alcacer was unlucky on the half hour when he shot on the turn and his effort hit the post with Bravo well beaten. Pique was looking vulnerable on a number of occasions but Valencia were unable to take advantage.
In the second half Gaya comes on for Orban who wasn't having the best of days against Saurez and Messi, and was carrying a yellow card and looked like he was soon going to pick up another one. A good change in my opinion as we really did not want to go down to ten men. Barcelona were now slowing the game down to their tempo and taking more control of the proceedings with their neat passing mainly due to the introduction of Rakitic in place of Adriano. They themselves were also unlucky when a Messi shot hits the bar having left Alves rooted the the spot.
In the final spell of the game Valencia pushed everybody except Alves forward but could not find a way through the home defence.  Just to rub salt into the wounds Messi was picked out with a long ball and had all the time in the world to run forward unchallenged.  Alves blocked his attempt to chip him but the ball fell kindly to his feet and he was able to poke home his 400th league goal to finish Valencia off in the final seconds.

Conclusion
A 2-0 defeat can never be good but the team played really well and showed that they can compete with the best teams in the world. Disappointing that we dropped the pace in the second half considering we had no midweek game and they did.  I also think the performance showed yet again that we need somebody who can score goals.  We cannot keep saying we were unlucky, we need results. Also great that we can talk about the game without the referee being mentioned. I did not really notice that he was there and that is how it should be in my opinion.

Player performances
Alves 7  Not needed too many times and had no chance with the goals scored.
Barragan  7   Played OK and did what was needed, also got forward and helped out with the attack a few times.
Ottamendi  7.5   Good solid performance yet again and no fault for the goals. Had to push up at the end to help get a goal and the second goal was not important.
Mustafi  7.5   Again his usual reliable self and showed his quality against the top players.
Orban  6.5   Definitely not one of his better games and had to be taken off as his challenges were getting a bit wild after he picked a his first card.
Fuego 7.0  A solid enough performance and showed again that he is not intimidated by big name players
Parejo 7  disappointing penalty miss. Not a bad effort really and if Bravo had gone the other way it would have been a fine penalty. But the only good penalty is the one that results in a goal.
Gomez  7   Glimpses of his brilliance but not really enough  to alter the course of the game.
Feghouli  6.5  Not  really enough influence on the game and was kept quiet
Rodrigo  6.5  Looked  willing and lively and made a few chances but still looks lacking in that final ruthless edge.
Alcacer 6.5  Again, plenty of effort and unlucky when he hit the post but we need him to be more ruthless in front of goal to fulfill his full potential.

Subtitutes
Gaya 6.5  looked a bit rusty but that is to be expected and I am sure he will soon be back to speed
Cancelo 6.5  Brings something a bit extra that Barragan doesn't seem to have but not given the chance to shine today
Negredo  N/A  not enough time.

Barcelona: Bravo; Alves, Piqué, Mathieu, Adriano (Rakitic, min.46); Mascherano, Xavi (Sergio Roberto, min.80), Sergio Busquets; Messi, Luis Suárez (Pedro, min.65)  Neymar.
Valencia: Alves; Barragán, Mustafi, Otamendi, Orbán (Gayá, min.46); Parejo, Javi Fuego, Feghouli (Joa Cencelo, min.67), André Gomes, Rodrigo  Alcácer (Negredo, min.74)
Goals 1-0, m.1: Luis Suárez, .   2-0, m.93: Messi.

Valencia 3-0 Levante 13th April 2015

I guess when you are fighting relegation, two nil down with 20 minutes to go, the last thing you want to see is the sight of Negredo coming on, but more on that later.  Despite the word coming out of the Valencia camp that there was no talk of revenge I don't think too many people actually believed that after the 3 points dropped in the away game earlier in the season.
The game started off lively enough for the home side and a pinpoint cross from Feghouli on the right finds Paco Alcacer to slot home.  Amazingly, Valencia are once again cheated by the officials when the goal is ruled out for offside.  When is this injustice going to end ?  Fortunately soon after Alcacer puts things right heading in from another great cross from the right from Parejo to make it 1-0 in the 16th minute.
The next goal was not long coming and in the 36th minute a fine cross from Orban on the left was headed in by Feghouli to make the score look a bit more respectable. I like to try to be unbiased and it has to be said that this goal should have been ruled out due to Orban being in an offside position when he took the pass but I guess it just proves that the officials are not biased, just bad.
Vezo was filling in for the suspended Otamendi and surprisingly Cancelo was in for Barragan at the right back position and with Parejo back and Orban in at left back givng the team an exciting attacking look.  Feghouli and Cancelo were working together really well and giving the Levante defence nightmares with their interplay. Also on the other flank, Rodrigo and Orban were working really well together and with Parejo and Gomez bossing the midfield the team looked very balanced.
Alves was called upon a number of times in keeping out a number of long shots that certainly would have troubled lesser goalkeepers more. Levante could not get through the solid home defence and resorted to long range efforts.
After 65 minutes De Paul and Barragan came on for Gomez and Fehouli with Barragan taking right back pushing Cancelo forward.  On 73 minutes Negredo comes on for Alcacer.
Then comes possibly the highlight of an evening with many other high points for Valencia when a great ball from the right finds Negredo on the edge of the box with 2 players marking him. He brushes them off, shielding the ball before unleashing months of pent up fury by firing past the hapless Marino to end a great evening. He hardly celebrated the goal, as if to say to everybody,  'This is what I can do when given the right ball'.

Summary.  A great night for Valencia but another nail in the coffin for our brothers up the road who now look in serious trouble. To be fair, apart from a few long shots they looked as if they did not believe they had any chance of winning and the scoreline could and should have been more emphatic.
Unfortunate bookings for Negredo and Mustafi for dissent and Parejo the only downers to the night.

Player ratings.

Alves 7.5  Always difficult to rate when he does not have much to do but made some great saves when called upon and never really looked like he would concede.
Cancelo  8.5  My man of the match and I am pleased that Nuno has been reading my opinions on here and finally seeing how much better than Barragan he is. An amazing performance and looks worth the fee being asked
Vezo  8.0  A high mark, I know but I thought he also fitted in well and made some great interceptions.  He has never let the team down and talk of him going out on loan next season from some people seems to me ridiculous, he is Valencia and must stay here.
Mustafi  7.5   Another solid performance from the BMW who seems like a veteran despite his young age.
Orban  7.5   Great performance again and is covering well for Gaya in his absence.  A really versatile player who could play almost anywhere and not look out of place
Fuego  7.0  A player that is not always noticed as he does the simple things without fuss and hardly makes a mistake, very underated player.
Parejo  7.5  Forming a great midfield partnership now with Gomez.  Some critism earlier in the season with people saying they can't play together but that has certainly been shown to be wrong now. He always seems to be able to find his passes effortlessly.
Gomez  7.0  Another great game and such a skillful player, just needs to get a few more goals.
Feghouli  7.5  A fine game and ran the opposing defenders ragged interlinking with Cancelo and left the field with a well deserved ovation when substituted. Good to see him score
Rodrigo  7.0  Certainly a player with no shortage of skills, in my opinion we have not seen the best of him yet with his finishing and he will definitely improve and be a top player for us I am sure. Needs a bit of luck in front of goal.
Alcacer  7.5   Great goal and good to see him on the scoresheet again always works hard for the team and causes panic when he is anywhere near the opponents goal.

Substitutes.
De Paul  7.0  Unlucky not to start after his performance last week but a very important part of the squad and has shown what he is capable of.
Barragan   7.0  Did  a good job covering for Cancelo allowing him to get forward but to me should be second choice.
Negredo  7.5  I really believe we are going to start seeing the real Negredo now in the later part of the season. It has been a long time coming but he looks a real beast when he comes on and the goal would have done wonders for his moral and confidence.

Valencia: Diego Alves, Joâo Cancelo, Mustafi, Vezo, Orban, Javi Fuego, Parejo, André Gomes (De Paul, m.65), Feghouli (Barragán, m.65), Rodrigo y Paco Alcácer (Negredo, m.73).

Updates

LATEST  NEWS

No updates for the last couple of games but I will try to catch up with what has been happening.
Firstly the Valencia CF v Villareal game on Sunday 5th April.  A rather disappointing result as we all expect to win the home games against lower placed teams, which fortunately at the moment includes most of the other teams.
This was a game with few openings in the first half with neither side seemingly being able to construct any decent opportunities.  The only incident of note was the booking of Parejo which puts him out of the next game against Athletic Club Bilbao. Negredo makes a late appearance and shows glimpses of what he is capable of and why we are paying the large fee for him.  All in all though an easily forgetable game and the only consolation is the one point we gained. It could have been worse when Otamendi hesitated on a bouncy through ball which almost allowed Giovani Santos in for a gift goal but he handled the ball and was rightly booked.

Athletic Club Bilbao v Valencia CF  Thursday 9th May
Starting the game without Parejo, who was replaced by Rodrigo it was almost a rerun of the previous game.  Very scrappy first half with few chances and seeing Piatti retire with a muscle injury being replaced by De Paul. To make things worse Andre Gomez picks up a head injury after an elbow from his team mate Otamendi which required him to be turbanised.  As for De Paul, for the first 20 minutes he looked like a player who had not played in the first team for a long while until suddenly finding his feet and putting in an amazing performance, He certainly looked like the best midfielder on the pitch and compounded it with a well taken goal after a pass from Orban.  Again Negredo makes a late appearance replacing Alcacer and again played an important part in livening up the proceedings with his powerful runs.
Just when it looked like we would be coming home with the three points secure, the referee decided that he would like to gain some of the attention from the game.  Otamendi going in for a fifty fifty ball was adjudged to have kicked the other player Mikel Jose on the leg.  It seemed that both players went in with their feet high but because the Athletic players surrounded the referee he sent off our player.  It was a strange situation in all ways because the ref had his red card out and waving it in front of an Athletic player whilst Otamendi was still on the ground and at first I thought he was sending him off. It is unusual for a ref to wave a card at a player who is still down.  A very harsh decision and no doubt he was intimidated by the players and crowd.  Also the 2 keepers were booked in the melee.
If that was not bad enough,  a minute from the end Artitz Aduriz grabs an equaliser when he stabs the ball home from an obvious offside position denying Valencia the extra two points.  Replays show that the linesman was in a perfect position to see the infringement and it has to be asked why the goal was not disallowed.  We can all come up with conspiracy theories some say he is an Athletico Madrid supporter and born in Santander, isn't that in the Basque region,  I am sure that has nothing to do with the fact that Athletic Bilbao is a Basque club. I am certain there are going to be more on this story in the coming weeks and even friends of mine in England have commented to me what a disgrace the offside goal and sending off was,

Please if you read this entry leave a comment.  It takes over an hour to write and I like to think that people have a view and want to share it. I will continue to write match reports if I know people are interested enough to leave a comment.

Gaya rejects Valencia's first contract renewal offer

Spanish media are reporting that Jose Luis Gaya agents have rejected the initial offer from Valencia CF to extend Gaya's contract. Right now Gaya's contract is set till 2018, but has a very low release clause of 18 million euros, due to his great performances this season and low release clause major teams across Europe have been following the situation and are ready to step in and acquire Gaya from Valencia CF.

Real Madrid are one of the biggest admirers of the player and see him as the perfect replacement for Marcelo who isn't getting any younger and has had more and more injury problems, while Coentrao is out of favors with the current coach.

While it is not surprising to have the initial contract offer rejected, these things take a lot of time and several iterations of the contract it is worrying due to the fact that Real Madrid and other clubs are interested in acquiring Jose Luis Gaya and they have the money and prestige to lure him in.

As I've reported few times already Real Madrid are not going to reach the release clause unless they have to, the two clubs have very good working relationship and Real Madrid won't want to undo that, but if other clubs like Arsenal, Manchester City, etc... increase their interest they might be forced to react fast and swift.

Hopefully the negotiations result in agreement between the parties, Gaya himself has said that he would like to continue at Valencia CF, I think he enjoys a really beneficial position at Valencia CF, he has the support of all of the fans, the staff, he's had a system that fits him, in bigger teams he is not going to have the same luxury and he won't be given time to develop further, so he should understand and I think he does that moving even to a "big" club is not necessarily better.

Andres Guardado to join PSV

Valencia CF and PSV are very close to reaching an agreement for the transfer of Andres Guardado to PSV. Andres Guardado was loaned to PSV in the summer after failing to impress Valencia CF coach Nuno Santo, but has fit in well with the PSV side, making 29 appearances for them and helping them reach number one position at the table.

The negotiations are supposed to be almost over with small details left to be worked out and a final agreement to be announced very soon.

Elche 0-4 Valencia CF Match Report

This has to be one of the best performances of the season so far. It can be said that Elche are not one of the strongest teams in the league but neither were Deportivo when they defeated us   3-0  earlier in the season. It is plain to see for even the most ardent critics  that we have come an awful long way since that day. Right from the start Valencia took control and roared on by their large contingent of fans who had made the relatively short journey, soon began finding openings in the  Elche defence. After 30 minutes we could have been 3 or 4 goals in front when chance after chance went begging and but for bad luck or the linesman's flag it could have been all over much earlier. Alcacer had 2 chances ruled out for offside marginally and also had a goal bound effort cleared after rounding the goalkeeper.  Otamendi was also unlucky as was Feghouli and Piatti.  Elche were struggling to get in to the game with only the Brazilian Jonathas showing any actual threat or effort. Andre Gomes broke the deadlock after 44 minutes When Feghouli managed to retrieve the ball from the goal line and cross for Gomes to fire home.

The second half continued much like the first half but Valencia were now showing even more confidence with the one goal cushion. The second goal was not long coming when it was the turn of Gomez to put in a great cross from the right for Alcacer to finally have a change of fortune and stab the waist high cross home in the 56 minute. Goal 3 came when Barragan broke on the right and centered. With Negredo well placed on the penalty spot and totally unmarked the cross was too deep for him but the unfortunate Roco managed to help out by steering the ball past his helpless goalkeeper for the third goal. Possibly this is a good example of Negredo's problems in not getting the right ball.  He found oceans of space but the ball was not played to him. Arguably he could have gone deeper where Alcacer  probably would have been and claimed the goal. However, a goal is a goal.  Paco, who had replaced Negredo was taken off as a precaution over his knee problem and was seen  having ice applied to his knee.   Otamendi  rounded off the night with a powerful header in the dying seconds from a corner from the left side rounding off an amazing performance from the Argentinian and the whole team on the night. Good to see Tropi also getting on the pitch if for only a couple of minutes. A great run by him shows a glimpse of what we may see in the future .

Conclusion:
A great team performance and nice to see the ball kept and passed around with confidence. It is much to early to make predictions on our end placing but it is looking good now for an automatic Champions League place if we can keep up our performances. Also it has to be said, just looking at the players who did not start the game: such as Orban, De Paul, Perez, Rodrigo and Vezo. The future looks really good. Also good news, no yellow cards for us

Player Ratings:
Alves 7.5 Not much to do on the night but what he did what he always does with his usual brilliance
Barragan  6.5 Still looks the weak link in the chain but was not called on too many times
Mustafi   7.0 Good solid performance as usual, is always in the right place when needed
Otamendi  8.5 Fantastic all round performance culminating in a great goal at the end. It is obvious why Man Utd offered  such a high price for him .. Go away Man Utd. he is ours.
Gaya 7.5 Another solid performance, he is just so boringly good every game (I mean it as a compliment)
Parejo  8.0 Hardly put a foot wrong and his passing  sometimes devastating. Nice to see no silly wayward passes. he is just so calm and controlled and will be one of the greats in the future, I think.
Fuego 7.0 Did his job well and helped the team to another clean sheet.
Gomez   7.5 Had a really good game and blended in well with Parejo, nice goal to round off a good performance.
Feghouli  7.5 Very busy and involved in all the good moves helping set up the goals and was unlucky not to score himself.
Alcacer  7.5 Nice to see Paco back and getting on the score sheet, let's pray he stays fit as I believe he is our best chance of gaining C.L. status with his goals.
Piatti  7.5 What a revelation this season he has been. To think that people were calling for him to be transferred, what a mistake that would have been.
Subs:
Negredo 6.0 for  Alcacer     67 mins  Hardly touched the ball.
Cancello 7.0  for Feghouli  82 mins  Would walk into most teams in La Liga
Tropi N/A for  Gomez       89 mins  One nice run. Good luck for the future.

Technical Details:
Elche: Tyton; Damian Suarez Lombán, Enzo Roco, Domingo Schism; Pasalic (Cristian Herrera, 59 m.), Adrian Gonzalez (Mosquera, 77 m.); Garry Rodrigues (Corominas, 74 m.), Fayçal Fajr, Victor; Jonathas.

Valencia: Diego Alves; Barragán, Mustafi, Otamendi, Gayá; Javi Fuego, Parejo (Tropi, 89 m.), André Gomes; Feghouli (gates, m. 82), Piatti and Alcácer (Negredo, m. 67).

Valencia CF vs Deportivo La Coruna Match Preview

Valencia CF vs Deportivo La Coruna Match Preview

Stadium: Vicente Calderon
Date: 13.03.2015, 20:45 CET
27th matchday, La Liga
Coaches: Nuno Santo and Victor Fernandez

Valencia CF have been in great form the last couple of weeks and after last week's draw with Atletico Madrid the team will look to secure a win at the Mestalla against Deportivo La Coruna. Deportivo have been historically a very strong team, in fact they've even challenged for the title few times, but as most teams in Spain they've been caught up with the financial reality and are now just a mediocre team at best.

Right now they are in 16th position on the table and still fighting to avoid relegation, with several clubs all within 7 points of each other. Usually 30 points have been enough to secure stay in the top flight, so they will be looking to achieve that number and tonight at the Mestalla would be looking into securing one point.

Its worth noting that Deportivo La Coruna beat Valencia CF 3-0 at their own turf in the first half of the season and that was with Valencia CF on their 3 goals beating run, that was actually the first time Yoel featured on goal and had a torrid time, with him and Mustafi making huge mistakes and contributing to that 3-0 loss.

Anyways I think Valencia CF have this game this time, the team is more balanced in how they approach the game, they are better oiled, its a well oiled machine and not a sort of a group of various parts that do things on their own. So I'm expecting to see a Valencia CF win over Deportivo La Coruna.

Mising from the squad in Javi Fuego to to his red card from last match and Skhodran Mustafi who has accumulated 5 yellow cards and will miss out this match. In his place likely to take the defensive slot is Ruben Vezo.

Valencia CF Squad:
Goalkeepers: Alves, Yoel
Defenders: Cancelo, Barragan, Vezo, Otamendi, Gaya, Orban
Midfielders: Parejo, Enzo, Felipe, Gomes, Feghouli, Piatti, De Paul
Forwards: Negredo, Moreno, Paco

Technical Details Valencia CF (probable setups):
Formation: 4-3-3
Line-up: Diego; Barragan, Vezo, Otamendi, Gaya; Enzo, Gomes, Parejo; Moreno, Paco, Piatti.
Tactics: Medium defensive line, own third pressure, mixed passing, counter attacks.

Match Prediction:
Valencia CF 2-0 Deportivo La Coruna
I'm expecting a casual win for Valencia CF. Yeah Deportivo are a tricky opponent and they beat us before when the team was in a great form, but now VCF is playing at home and the team is overall better and more balanced.

Nuno named La Liga BBVA Manager for February

Valencia CF manager Nuno Espirito Santo has been named La Liga BBVA Manager of the Month for February. Valencia CF have been on an unbeaten streak for 5 matches, including 4 wins and 1 draw this past weekend against Atletico Madrid.

Shkodran Mustafi, Jose Luis Gaya and Daniel Parejo found themselves in the best XI of the month of February.

Valencia CF will hope to continue their good form on Match the 15th when they meet Deportivo La Coruna at the Mestalla.

Atletico Madrid 1-1 Valencia CF Match Report

The match for third place is over and as it stands everything stays the same as both teams scored a goal each and the match ended in a 1-1 draw. Very interesting, very scrappy match, not many fluidity in the play and that's pretty much what was expected, that is what Atletico Madrid style is and Valencia CF managed to pair quite well against that style at Atletico Madrid's own grounds.

The match started with a high tempo as expected, both sides clashing at midfield and as predicted Valencia CF coach Nuno Santo chose a more power based team with Enzo Perez, rather than a more flair one with Andre Gomes, this did give results in the first 10 minutes of the match with Valencia CF largely controlling the tempo of the game and having more ball possession.

Valencia CF did have some runs towards Atletico Madrid goal and some final third play, but the final ball just wasn't there and the wingers were being marked solidly, with the full backs in Gaya and Barragan preoccupied with defensive duties.

After about 20 minutes I'd say Atletico Madrid took control of the match, they love their fouls and indiscreet kicks and stuff, with Torres particularly being quite nasty and committing dirty fouls, he was pretty lucky to stay on the pitch.

Atletico Madrid would score in the 33rd minute, they took a free kick, the ball was headed from the Valencia CF penalty area just to the outside, well technically it hit someone from the Atletico players either on the hand or on the shoulder and the ball went straight to where Koke was and he shot and scored. Otamendi was in a good position I believe to block the shot, but he reacted a bit too slow and haphazardly and it was 1-0 for Atletico Madrid.

After the goal it was mostly Atletico Madrid, they had a few more chances, nothing major, but a shot here, a header there, a half chance over there, all of those add up and Valencia CF have been quite happy to avoid more goals.

Towards the end of the first half Valencia CF took control of the game once again, but a bit too little too late and they haven't been able to do much with the ball, it usually floats around the final third and then its lost.

I think the three biggest disappointments for me in the first half are Otamendi, Feghouli and Negredo. They just haven't seen up to par and I wonder if playing Otamendi was the right choice and if he is 100% fit. As for Negredo he just seems lost and isn't causing them any problems. Feghouli seems to be mostly on the periphery of the match as well and hasn't justified his inclusion.

The second half was similar to the first as Valencia CF came out as the more dominant team out of the gates, but again as time progressed Atletico Madrid took their turn and started applying more pressure and assuming control.

Atletico Madrid did attack frequently and got a lot of free kicks and corners, something which they are very dangerous at, I think over 13 goals scored from set pieces for them, but Valencia CF defense stood still and Diego Alves was always positioned well and was able to claim some of the crosses.

Atletico Madrid would have a great chance to make the score 2-0 somewhere around the mid of the second half, there was a cross from the right side that was moving towards the far post on the other side, someone from the Atletico players headed the ball towards the center and it literally fell on top of Tiago who was alone and only 2 maybe 3 meters away from goal, but managed to miss an empty goal.

As Valencia CF brought in Andre Gomes for Enzo Perez and Atletico Madrid substituted Koke the play shifted and Valencia CF once again gained a foothold in this match and started to dictate the tempo. This lead to several runs and crosses from Valencia CF, but nothing major and most of the play was very scrappy on both sides.

The break for Valencia CF would come in at the 77th minute when Parejo shot from a long range free kick, but Moya was positioned a little too far out, the ball seemed to bounce from his fists to the bar and into play again, with Valencia's Mustafi reacting really quick and heading the ball into the net to make it 1-1.

After that it was again mostly midfield battle, with Valencia CF generally looking a bit better, though Atletico Madrid were dangerous in their counter attacks and Valencia CF defenders had to constantly deal with those.

In the final moments of the match Fuego would earn himself a red card and with good reason too, it was a last ditch to prevent a dangerous Atletico Madrid attack and it was well worth the red card, it was technically a second yellow into an automatic red.

Technical details:
Atlético Madrid: Moyá; Juanfran, Giménez, Godín, Siqueira; Tiago, Gabi (Raúl Jiménez, m. 80); Arda, Koke (Mario Suárez, m. 68), Fernando Torres (Mandjukic, m. 61), Raúl García.

Valencia CF: Diego Alves, Antonio Barragán, Shkodran Mustafi, Nicolas Otamendi, José Gayá; Javi Fuego, Enzo Pérez (André Gomes, m. 67) Dani Parejo, Pablo Piatti (Lucas Orban, m. 90); Sofiane Feghouli (Rodrigo, m. 58), Álvaro Negredo.

Goals:
Koke 1-0, 32 min. Assist Tiago
Shkodran Mustafi 1-1, 77 min.

Player Ratings:
Diego 6.5 - Very secure, handled free kicks and corner kicks superbly and dealt with what little came towards him easily.
Barragan 7 - Quite secure at the back, tried to get forward and did send several crosses, but his crossing accuracy was terrible. Was very active both at defense and offense though.
Mustafi 8 - Really solid at the back, held his position very well, dealt with the attacks that came his way securely and to top it off scored the goal for Valencia CF.
Otamendi 6.5 - Started off shaky, several mistakes from the Argentinian, but improved in the second half and made several crucial tackles.
Gaya 7 - Had to deal with a lot at the back and did so in a good fashion, was beaten two or three times, but nothing came out of it. Moved forward at every opportunity and was very dangerous, few nice crosses.
Fuego 6.5 - Usually a red card automatically qualifies for a -1 points in my ranking system, but since this was a crucial tackle to prevent a dangerous attack it cancels itself out. Was generally good in his defensive duties, provided some nice safe passes in the midfield which were good in this type of match.
Enzo 6 - Probably the weakest of the midfielders, ran a lot and covered a ton of ground, involved in few attacks as well, but could not bring something substantial and was taken off for Gomes.
Parejo 7 - Was the main man in midfield, controlled possession well at certain times, spread the ball well and did end up doing a lot of defensive duties as well. His shot from a free kick lead to the goal for Valencia CF.
Feghouli 5.5 - Mostly anonymous and when he got the ball there was nothing of quality, he mostly lost it. He needs improve significantly, since the competition is fierce and he won't be a starter with these type of performances.
Negredo 5.5 - Not very involved in the game, when balls came his way he was slow to react, lost many of his air duels as well. Should be doing a lot more for the team.
Piatti 6 - He was mostly kept quit by some good defending, did had several runs and tried to get things going, but nothing panned out.
Subs:
Moreno 5.5 - Didn't add anything over Feghouli. He did have better link-up with Barragan and didn't lose the ball as much, but was also safer in his dribbles and forward runs.
Gomes 6 - Provided different type of style in midfield and when he came in Valencia CF did start to control the match, but that was more from Koke leaving at the same minute, than Gomes having a huge impact.
Orban N/A - Last minute substitution after Fuego's red card.

Atletico Madrid vs Valencia CF Match Preview

Atletico Madrid vs Valencia CF Match Preview
Stadium: Vicente Calderon
Date: 08.03.2015, 21:00 CET
26th matchday, La Liga
Coaches: Diego Simeone and Nuno Santo

Last time these two teams faced eachother Valencia CF were victorious in what was a convincing 3-1 beating of defending champions Atletico Madrid. This time though I suppose things won't be the same and I'm expecting a lot more opposition from Atletico Madrid. They are playing at their home turf, and unlike the start of the season when they were adjusting with the changes in their squad, now they are settled and have been in good form.

With that said Valencia CF were adjusting to changes in their squad as well and still managed to beat Atletico Madrid handily, though of course I'm not that brazen as to expect another such convincing victory, especially at the Vicente Calderon, but Valencia CF has settled as well and have been in great form recently, so I do expect a good showing. I'd like to see Valencia CF win against Atletico Madrid though a draw won't be that bad either.

Good news for Valencia CF is that Nicolas Otamendi has returned to the team and is available for selection, Paco Alcacer is also back in training and available for selection and there aren't any major injuries across the full team. Nuno Espirito Santo has been trying out different teams in training, especially changing the midfield and trying different combinations, seeing what works and which midfield combination can exert most pressure and influence in midfield.

Atletico Madrid are known for their relentless pressure in midfield and physical play, so they have to be countered at their own game and really shut down in midfield to prevent their attacks, while Valencia CF can and should take advantage of their weak defensive wide areas with players like Piatti and possibly Feghouli running at their fullbacks at pace and creating counter attacking chances.

Valencia CF Squad:
Goalkeepers: Alves, Yoel
Defenders: Cancelo, Barragan, Vezo, Mustafi, Otamendi, Gaya, Orban
Midfielders: Fuego, Parejo, Enzo, Felipe, Gomes, Feghouli, Piatti, De Paul
Forwards: Negredo, Moreno, Paco

Technical Details Valencia CF (probable setups):
Formation: 4-3-3
Line-up: Diego; Barragan, Mustafi, Otamendi, Gaya; Fuego, Enzo, Parejo; Feghouli, Negredo, Piatti.
Tactics: Medium defensive line, own third pressure, mixed passing, counter attacks.

Match Prediction:
Atletico Madrid 2-2 Valencia CF
This it will be firecracker match. Both teams are capable of scoring goals, Atletico Madrid are vulnerable on the counter with speedy flank attacks, while Valencia CF have usually been weaker in the midfield and teams catching the defense a bit out of position and things like that, something that Atletico Madrid can exploit.
Ultimately I think both teams will score 2 goals and the match will end in a 2-2 draw.

Valencia CF interested in Eduardo Salvio

By now Valencia CF has been linked to pretty much every Benfica players there is, Valencia's owner Peter Lim purchased Rodrigo Moreno and Andre Gomes from Benfica before he took over Valencia CF and obviously used his ownership of these players as a bid for the club, Valencia CF then moved in for Joao Cancelo and got him on a loan deal and finally got Enzo Perez in the summer transfer window after trying to purchase him for over a year.

The club has been linked to several other Benfica players and the latest rumor is that Valencia CF is back at it and interested in Eduardo Salvio, Benfica's right winger. I think he has been linked with Valencia CF before, but at this point who can remember, so this is nothing new.

Does Valencia CF need an additional right winger? The answer is absolutely not, Feghouli is already having trouble breaking into the first team even though he is our only natural right winger, with Moreno and recently De Paul rotating on that right wing spot, and in the summer we'll get Fede Cartabia back from his loan deal at Cordoba and he's been playing amazingly at Cordoba, has definitely been their best player and he is operating as a right winger there from the few times I've watched their games.

So is there any merit to this rumor? Who knows, the club would be looking for different reinforcements in the summer and if the team qualifies for the Champions League they could spend over 50 million euros on new players, so its possible, but unlikely.

I think the club might want to get rid of Felipe Augusto who hasn't proven himself to be good enough for this team and possibly go for a world class defensive midfielder, someone that would compete directly with Javi Fuego and truth be told Fuego has been really good, doing his job at the back really well, but sometimes if you want to challenge for titles you need a player that is just as good in an offensive sense as well and can have a big impact in attack as well.

Valencia CF 2-0 Real Sociedad Match Report

Valencia CF wins for the 4th straight match in a row, tallying up good 12 points from the last 4 matches. Ever since the 1-0 loss to Malaga, Valencia CF have been in great form, playing a lot better, having more midfield control and most importantly securing their matches.

Big contribution to these great results has been Pablo Piatti, ever since he came back from injury he's been in top form and has contributed in all matches significantly and today was no different. Pablo Piatti scored both of Valencia's goals, and sure the first goal was a rather lucky one, it was deflected off of Real Sociedad defender and it went it, but a goal is a goal and he'll be happy with it.

Valencia CF were really comfortable in today's match, especially in the second half, but even before that the team created more chances and were more dangerous on the flanks and counter, with Real Sociedad failing to muster up any significant chances.

The first goal for Valencia CF would come after a throw in, the ball reached Parejo down the right wing, he moved forward a bit and shot the ball in the penalty area, with Pablo Piatti being at the right place. His shot was blocked, but the shot was deflected into the empty net with the goalkeeper having thrown himself in the wrong direction.

The second goal would come in a similar fashion, this time it was Sofiane Feghouli who received a long pass, he used his pace to race past a Real Sociedad defender and pass the ball into the penalty area where Piatti was waiting and he easily slotted the ball into the net.

After the two goal lead it was smooth sailing for Valencia CF, keeping control of the ball, attacking through the wings, though nothing too major. The coach Nuno Santo changed both the wingers, though a bit erroneously in my opinion didn't take out Daniel Parejo who could have gotten a yellow card and missed the next match against Atletico Madrid. Fortunately though he didn't get yellow carded and will be available for the next match.

Technical Details:
Valencia CF: Diego Alves; Antonio Barragán, Shkodran Mustafi, Nicolás Otamendi (Lucas Orban, m. 46), José Gayà; Dani Parejo, Enzo Pérez, Javi Fuego, Pablo Piatti (Rodrigo de Paul, m. 80), Sofiane Feghouli (Rodrigo, m. 67), Álvaro Negredo.

Real Sociedad: Rulli, Aritz, Ansotegi, Iñigo, Yuri (Finnbogason, m. 69), Elustondo (De la Bella, m. 65), R. Pardo, Granero, X. Prieto, Canales (Hervías, m. 46), Agirretxe.

Goals:
Pablo Piatti 1-0, 52 min. Assist Daniel Parejo
Pablo Piatti 2-0, 55 min. Assist Sofiane Feghouli

Valencia CF could invest 50 million in summer reinforcements

Valencia CF sporting director Francisco Rufete announced at a Spanish radio station that Valencia CF could invest up to 50 million in summer reinforcements if the club qualified for the Champions League.

He reiterated how important it is to qualify for the Champions League and that doing so would give Valencia CF significant boost of money, allowing them to stay within fair play rules and still invest 50 million in new players if there is a need.

As you all know with Peter Lim at the helm the club can easily invest 50 million euros and more to bring in new reinforcement, but the issue becomes the Uefa fair play rules and Valencia CF has to stay within them. Peter Lim also wants the club to be profitable and turn out a net positive each year.

Jose Luis Gaya to sign new Valencia CF contract

Jose Luis Gaya is close to extending his contract with Valencia CF. The club has been working really hard trying to tie in the players with expiring contracts next year and earlier this year it was Paco's contract that was extended, now we've learned Pablo Piatti is also to to sign a contract extension and Jose Luis Gaya will be the next in line to be tied in long term with the club.

Right now Gaya has a very low release clause set at only 18 million euros and with his impressive performances this season he is gaining the attention of top clubs like Real Madrid, Manchester City and other, but the new contract will have a very high release clause set somewhere around 40 to 45 million euros.

Its also said that his salary would more than double with the new contract and would have Jose Luis Gaya stay at Valencia CF until 2020. With interest from Real Madrid very high, Valencia CF are eager to get this done and secure Gaya at Valencia CF for the next 5 years.

Red Bull to sponsor Valencia CF?

Will Red Bull sponsor Valencia CF?
Red Bull officials have met with Valencia CF officials and held talks about some sort of partnership. Red Bull sponsor a ton of sports teams, athletes and competitions, they actually have a Formula 1 team, though they haven't been too involved in football, but in the past few years they've been making strides to get involved more in football. Obviously they are not doing this from the goodness of their hearth, they get advertisement, brand recognition, improve their image.

Red Bull and Valencia CF officials talked about partnership and finding mutual language and spheres where they can work together, right now its all in the open and its not clear what type of involvement they want, for example even though Valencia CF doesn't currently have a shirt sponsor they have sponsors, its just that these are smaller sponsorships and they use advertisement in the stadium and in the press conferences.

So the question is does Red Bull plan to become a shirt sponsor which means they will need to spend a lot of money, likely in the region of about 4 million or are they looking for some smaller involvement.

Pablo Piatti to be offered new contract

Pablo Piatti
Pablo Piatti has impressed with his performances this season and has been a key player for Valencia CF, so its no surprise that Valencia CF have offered him a new and improved contract that would keep the player until 2020. The negotiations are just beginning, so its likely going to be at least two weeks before an agreement is reached, but its said that Piatti is looking forward to penning a new long term contract as he is happy at Valencia CF.

Apart from him Valencia CF are also looking into extending the contracts of Daniel Parejo, Sofiane Seghouli and of course Jose Luis Gaya.

Napoli interested in Shkodran Mustafi

SSC Napoli are interested in Valencia CF defender Shkodran Mustafi who's been in top form this season and together with Nicolas Ottamendi are one of the best defending duos in Spain and even Europe. Nicolas Otamendi has peaked the interest of wealthy clubs like Manchester United, PSG and others, while Shkodran Mustafi is the more modest 'commodity' and clubs like Borusia Dortmund and now Napoli are interested in acquiring his services.

Apart from Napoli there are reportedly few English clubs interested in the defender as well. So far though Mustafi has gives a statement that he is focused on Valencia CF and isn't looking to move to a different club.

In case any club wants to acquire his services they will have to splash out a huge sum of money, probably in the region of 20 million euros, since Valencia CF aren't a selling club and if they do sell they will look to get an amazing deal and bring in quality replacement.

Radamel Falcao to join Valencia CF?

Radamel Falcao to join Valencia CF?
Radamel Falcao is supposedly set to join Valencia CF in the summer, as the club looks to strengthen its attack and the club have identified Radamel Falcao as the perfect option. He is currently on loan at Manchester United, but so far he hasn't impressed in England and is going to return to Monaco in the summer, who will be looking to sell him.

Peter Lim is personal friends with the super football agent Jorge Mendes and has a close professional relationship with him as well, so the agent has forwarded Radamel Falcao to Valencia CF and the club is interested in signing him.

He would not come cheap though as his original price is over 40 million euros, but since he's flopped at Manchester United and Monaco are determined to sell him, his price is said to be at a more reasonable 25 to 30 million euros.

Inter Milan interested in Antonio Barragan

Italian football club Inter Milan is supposedly interested in Valencia CF right back Antonio Barragan. Inter have strengthened significantly in the winter transfer market, but their coach Roberto Mancini feels like he need more defensive reinforcements, especially attacking full backs since Inter have often played with 5 players at the back or 3 central defenders and 2 full backs, depending how you see the formation.

Antonio Barragan has extended his contract till 2017, but the player has a low release clause and its possible the team could sell him if the offer is in the region of 6 million euros.

He's been a solid performer this season, previous seasons he's been inconsistent, but under new coach Nuno Espirito Santo he's been performing at a solid level. I know some readers of this blog would like to see him replaced and this could be it, though it will be hard to find a suitable replacement, the market doesn't have too many good, reliable right backs.

Valencia CF vs Getafe CF Match Report

Valencia CF secured yet another important victory in the fight for Champions League football against a well organized and tough to crack Getafe side. Valencia CF now is just 3 points behind Atletico Madrid who lost two to zero to Celta, their thin squad possibly catching up to them.

Valencia CF were lucky in the end to get to this 1-0 victory, since Getafe were a tough side to crack and if it wasn't for Negredo's penalty it might have ended in a scoreless draw.

The first half started explosive with Valencia CF instantly gaining control, with Otamendi running forward to the oppositions third, passing the ball to Gaya who runs into the penalty area and passes the ball to Negredo, but his shot is blocked.

Valencia CF would continue the pressure and attacking, with just few moments later Gaya running down the left flank again and passing the ball to Enzo Perez who's pass towards the center of the penalty area is blocked.

Valencia CF would threaten later on again this time Piatti dribbling around two Getafe players and then passing the ball to Rodrigo De Paul who was unmarked, but his long range shot was just wide, maybe if he passed or went forward it could have opened a more dangerous situation, but as it was it was a wasted shot.

I got to say it was by far the most dynamic Valencia CF I've seen in quite a while, it was pressure all over the pitch, good control of the ball, dangerous runs on the left flank, quickly swarming Getafe players and winning the ball, it was an explosive 15 minutes opening from Valencia CF. Of course after those initial 15 minutes the game calmed down as the players started tiring and it was a slower flow of the match.

The rest of the first half was pretty much fight in the middle of the park with Valencia CF being more dangerous when attacking and having more attacks, though nothing concrete or clear cut.

The second half was pretty much a copy of the first half, the team started good again and had few runs down the left flank, but again nothing too dangerous. Valencia CF coach Nuno Santo would make the first substitution in the 60th minute bringing in Sofiane Feghouli for De Paul who had a limited contribution, the left flank with Piatti and Gaya was definitely much more dangerous.

Feghouli didn't bring too much change, some more brute force, trying more penetrative runs, but he also lost the ball a lot more times.

Anyways the goal for Valencia CF would come from a penalty, Feghouli made an erroneous pass with the ball hitting a Getafe player, but it kind of went flying in the penalty area towards Negredo, he positioned himself in front of Getafe defender who hit him from behind trying to get the ball and a penalty was awarded.

Negredo took the penalty and slotted securely in the net to make it 1-0 for Valencia CF.

The biggest change for Valencia CF would be when Rodrigo Moreno came in, he instantly had a big effect and found himself in several chances, the first one was when Feghouli dribbled past a player from the right wing, went into the penalty area, brought another defender on to him and then passed to Moreno who was clear on goal and only about several meters away from goal, but his shot was way too powerful and went way above the goal.

Later on Moreno would heave another chance, this time from a cross from the left and he headed the ball just above the goal again.

All of those misses were almost punished by Getafe in the dying moments of the match as they had a clear cut chance to score, their attack started from the left wing, there was a cross towards one of their players who was alone on goal just one meters away from goal and the goal was empty, but thankfully for Valencia CF he managed to miss. Truth be told the ball was moving very fast and powerful, so it would have been really hard to convert it to go into the goal.

Ultimately Valencia CF won, the team had several chances to score more goals, but it needed a penalty to be able to score a goal and some of the misses almost came back to hunt us, thankfully Getafe players didn't have their scoring shoes on either, and Valencia CF walks away with 3 more points in the bag.

Technical Details:
Valencia CF: Diego Alves, Barragan, Mustafi, Otamendi, Gayà, Javi Fuego, Enzo Pérez, Parejo (Rodrigo, m.72), De Paul (Feghouli, M.60), Piatti and Negredo (Orban, m.90).

Getafe CF: Jona, Alexis, Naldo, Velázquez (Vigaray, m.69), Roberto Lago (Escudero, m.55), Juan Rodriguez, Lacen, Sarabia, Sammir (Freddy, m.67), Diego Castro and Alvaro.

Goals:
Alvaro Negredo 1-0(p.g.), 71 min.

Player Ratings:
Diego Alves 6 - Pretty much a spectator for most of the match, I don't think he had to make a save.
Barragan 6 - Didn't have too much to worry at the back, this allowed him to move forward a lot, but with limited success.
Mustafi 6.5 - Did his job well, wasn't troubled too much, though had a few dangerous moments at the back.
Otamendi 6.5 - Same as Mustafi, did his job at the back well and wasn't troubled too much.
Gaya 8 - Constant threat down the left flank, with Getafe's attacks limited he was able to attack as much as he liked and did form a great partnership with Piatti.
Fuego 6 - Was anonymous for most of the match, though he did break down some of the Getafe attacks and provided accurate simple passes.
Parejo 7 - Very good performance by the captain, kept possession and provided intelligent and accurate passes most of the time, leading the team from the back and into attack.
Enzo Perez 6.5 - Improved performance over his last few games, he'd be pleased with his progress, though he will need to do a lot more to justify his high price tag.
De Paul 6 - Did pose a danger once or twice, he had two long range shots, but didn't have the same penetration and contribution as Piatti.
Negredo 7 - Was pretty active in this match and as the sole attacker did a lot of work upfront, though he didn't have any clear cut chances. Positioned well to get the penalty from which he easily converted to give Valencia CF the lead.
Piatti 8 - Great play by Piatti, was menacing for the Getafe defense and with Gaya's overlapping runs on the left they did great work, with most of VCF attacks coming from them.
Subs:
Feghouli 6 - More direct running, had one good pass to Moreno, but overall similar contribution to De Paul.
Moreno 6.5 - Had a big impact on the game once he came on, provided a big threat against Getafe and found himself in good positions time and time again, unfortunate not to score, if he would have scored he could have easily been man of the match.
Orban N/A - Not enough time.

Borusia Dortmund interested in Shkodran Mustafi

Borusia Dortmund are said to be interested in Valencia CF center back Shkodran Mustafi who along with Nicolas Otamendi has caught the eye of many top European clubs. Even though Borusia Dortmund are currently fighting relegation battle and are pretty much guaranteed to miss out on Champions League football, they still command a lot of respect in Germany and the club is a good improving ground for players.

Borusia Dortmund are likely going to lose Mats Hummels in the summer with several clubs chasing after him and they are going to use part of the money to replace him. Valued at 40 million euros, Dortmund will have plenty of money to work with to get a proper replacement and an offer of 20 million euros might entice Valencia CF to sell Shkodran Mustafi if the management thinks they can find a suitable replacement.

As far as the match report against Getafe, I'm going to write it later today and post it late in the night or tomorrow morning. I watched the match, but was busy and couldn't write the report.

Valencia CF vs Getafe CF Match Preview

Valencia CF vs Getafe CF Match Preview
Stadium: Mestalla
Date: 15.02.2015, 12:00 CET
23rd matchday, La Liga
Coaches: Nuno Santo and Quique Flores

Valencia CF managed to secure a very important win last week against Espanyol that put it ahead of Sevilla on the table, be it by only one point, but yesterday Sevilla managed to secure a big 3-0 win over Cordoba and thus retake the position on the table, so this win is crucial for Valencia CF and since its at home at the Mestalla its a must win game.

Valencia CF have been playing incredibly well at home, the problem has lied with the away matches this season and last game against Espanyol was important in order to break the trend of losing so many points at away games, so today at the Mestalla the team should be able to secure a comfortable win. The big difference for this match is that it starts at 12 O'clock CET, so its a big change from the night matches Valencia CF have been playing so far, but this shouldn't affect  the team at all.

As far as the players for this match Paco Alcacer and Andre Gomes are unavailable, but everyone else is and due to the two missing players Nuno has even included Felipe Augusto in the squad. As far as the formation and tactics I think its going to be a 4-3-3, but I think we are going to see Moreno benched as he hasn't shown too much in the last few matches, so most likely Feghouli is going to start.

Valencia CF Squad:
Goalkeepers: Alves, Yoel
Defenders: Cancelo, Barragan, Vezo, Mustafi, Otamendi, Gaya, Orban
Midfielders: Fuego, Parejo, Enzo, Felipe, Tropi, Feghouli, Piatti, De Paul
Forwards: Negredo, Moreno

Technical Details Valencia CF (probable setups):
Formation: 4-3-3
Line-up: Diego; Barragan, Mustafi, Otamendi, Gaya; Fuego, Enzo, Parejo; Feghouli, Negredo, Piatti.
Tactics: Medium defensive line, own third pressure, mixed passing, counter attacks.

Match Prediction:
Valencia CF 2-0 Getafe CF
I expect mostly a comfortable 2-0 win for Valencia CF. I know the last few matches have been turbulent and crazy at times, but pretty much all of the squad is now available,  we have depth again with Piatti and Feghouli on the wings, the coach has more options and I think its about time we got a straightforward win.

Alcacer out for 1-2 weeks

Valencia CF forward Paco Alcacer left the match against Espanyol with some discomfort and the medical report revealed that it is a deep bone bruise in the right knee (which is not as serious as it sounds). He will be out for approximately 10 days and as such will miss the match against Getafe next week at the Mestalla. Expect Negredo to start those games.

Amunt!

RCD Espanyol 1-2 Valencia CF Match Report

Valencia CF managed to win against RCD Espanyol in what was a straightforward match for almost 90 minutes, but basically a last minute error by both Parejo and Mustafi guaranteed a nerve racking ending in which Espanyol had more chances to score than their whole match before that.

Anyways Valencia CF managed a revenge for the cup loss and got 3 important points at an away terrain, something that has been very difficult for the team to do consistently and the team is back on a good track once again. As I suspected the return of Pablo Piatti was crucial, with him managing to score a goal in his first match after a month out with injury.

The first half was mostly battle for control in the midfield, we saw a Valencia CF side that fought for midfield control and for the first time in so many matches the team managed to lead in the possession percentages, but the chances were not coming. In fact it was Espanyol who threatened first with a short range shot being saved by Diego Alves, managing to prevent a goal.

Nuno Santo made an early second half substitution bringing in Gomes for Enzo Perez who I must criticize for being really ineffective ever since that Real Madrid match. I mean he came in and his first match was amazing, did so much work in that match against Real Madrid and ever since then his contributions have been minimal. He doesn't add anything of value to the Valencian midfield and at this point seems kind of a very expensive surplus to requirements.

Back to the game though, Valencia CF were playing more wide at the second period, but again chances were at a premium and to make matters worse Paco acquired what seems like a muscle injury and was substituted for Negredo.

The first goal would come in the 62nd minute, when Parejo would pass on to Gaya and this one would cross inside the penalty area where the ball found Piatti who's touch was just enough to change the ball movement and slot it into the net.

The second goal for Valencia CF would come in the 85th minute from a Parejo free kick. Parejo free kick shot was superb, hitting the post and the ball bouncing from the post to the goalkeepers back or head and bouncing inside the net. It was a bit lucky, but on the other hand it was a great show as well.

Just as it seemed that it would be a fairly straightforward win, Parejo and Mustafi had to complicate the situation by allowing Espanyol to score. Parejo had the ball and in original Parejo fashion he makes a really risky backward pass, Mustafi half sleeping failed to get to the ball as the determined Sergio Garcia lifted his leg further up, got the ball and went on to score a goal and give Espanyol a chance.

The 4 minutes stoppage time were nerve racking with Espanyol looking really dangerous, but ultimately Valencia CF held and secured themselves a very important win, especially considering that Sevilla lost their match against Getafe.

BTW my prediction was spot on. The match finished exactly as I predicted.

Technical Details:
RCD Espanyol: Pau López; Arbilla, Álvaro González, Héctor Moreno, Duarte; Cañas, Víctor Sánchez (Salva Sevilla, m. 69), Lucas Vázquez, Víctor Álvarez (Montañés, m. 77); Sergio García, Caicedo (Stuani, m. 68).

Valencia CF: Diego Alves; Antonio Barragán, Shkodran Mustafi, Lucas Orban, José Gayá; Javi Fuego, Enzo Pérez (André Gomes, m. 46), Dani Parejo, Pablo Piatti; Rodrigo (Sofiane Feghouli, m. 71), Paco Alcácer (Álvaro Negredo, m. 52).

Goals:
Pablo Piatti 1-0, 62 min. Assist Jose Luis Gaya
Pau Sabata(o.g.) 2-0, 85 min.
Sergio Garcia 1-2, 89 min.

Player Ratings:
Diego 7 - Crucial save in the first half and generally solid at the back.
Barragan 6.5 - Solid at the back, few important defensive blocks and decent movement forward, though nothing to brag home about.
Mustafi 5.5 - Big blunder there at the end, very unfocused and easily beaten to give Espanyol a goal back. Other than that was decent in defense.
Orban 5.5 - Poor performance, easily passed and dribbled by few times as well as poor positioning few times.
Gaya 8 - Once again big performance from Gaya being one of the biggest threats in the team going forward and doing a solid defensive job as well. His forward arrays were rewarded when his cross reached Piatti who managed to score.
Fuego 6 - Good defensive interceptions, covered the final third and made accurate short passes.
Parejo 7 - Would have had better rank if not for his terrible back pass that lead to Espanyol's goal. Was the engine for the team, moving the team forward and pretty much creating most of the play.
Enzo 5 - The honeymoon period is over and his contributions will be looked much more critically by me. As in the last few matches he hasn't contributed much. He ran a lot, but that alone is not enough if he doesn't achieve anything with all that running. Seems lost as to what to do and how to play.
Moreno 5.5 - Was pretty much invisible for most of the match. Hardly any contribution and the few times he got the ball on the left he didn't do anything with it.
Paco 5.5 - Didn't have much service, so hard to judge him. Seemed a willing runner and covered big distances, but unfortunately got injured and forced out of the game early.
Piatti 8 - Has been crucial for many matches this season and to hear many fans in the comments say he is bad or not good enough is very strange. Once again a very Piatti like contribution with lost of running on the left, getting few defenders on to himself and creating space on the other side and being in the right place for the Gaya cross to score the first goal for Valencia CF.
Subs:
Gomes 5.5 - Improvement over Enzo, but he won't be too pleased with his performance either. Needs to step up and provide better passes and support the flanks more.
Negredo 5.5 - Similar contribution to Paco, nothing too substantial.
Feghouli N/A - Hard to judge his play, he had enough time, but I feel like with the way the game was played I can't give him a rating. If I had to it would probably be around 6, he did have few good moves in the center of the pitch and helped pressure Espanyol midfield a lot.
