Antonio Barragan signs new contract

Antonio Barragan has accepted Valencia CF new contract and it is now just a formality that needs to be officially announced.

The club and Barragan had long contract negotiations and at times it seemed as the negotiations would break down and no deal can be reached, but he's accepted Valencia's latest contract proposal and will be extending his stay in Valencia CF.

Valencia CF were also looking at other right back for the potential Barragan exit, but realistically speaking it would have been foolish of him to leave Valencia CF, especially at this time when its becoming a great, formidable club once again with Peter Lim's ownership.

Valencia CF 2-1 Real Madrid Match Report

Valencia CF beat Real Madrid by two goals to one. Its been a long time coming for Valencia CF, the team has lost so many times to Real Madrid and there has been suspect refereeing for most of the matches for the past I'd like to say 5 years, there's always something that happened, whether it was a red card for VCF or a wrongful offside that would deny a perfectly reasonable goal, but today the better team won and the referee couldn't get in between Valencia CF and its victory.

Real Madrid were coming to this match with a streak of 22 wins, they were on a record breaking path and looking as strong as ever to continue their streak. They met their match in Valencia CF though and lost. I got to hand it to the coach Nuno Santos who obviously studied Real Madrid really meticulously and took notice of the chips in their armor and was able to utilize that to our advantage.

The match started with Valencia CF pressing high up the pitch and fighting for every ball, in my match preview I predicted a low defensive line, similar to Barcelona where the team held the position, but this time it was high pressure all over the pitch and that caught Real Madrid off guard, they didn't expect such a strong start and Valencia CF were mostly in control of the game.

Despite the good start for Valencia CF it was Real Madrid who scored the first goal through Cristiano Ronaldo from the penalty spot. Negredo supposedly played with his hand in the penalty area and the referee instantly awarded the penalty which Cristiano Ronaldo has no problems converting.

Both sides were now fighting for control of the match and neither team really had strong chances. Gaya came in for Piatti early on in the second half and was threatening the left wing constantly though, he was playing with such pace and he seemed as the best attacker for Valencia CF for most of the time.

Gareth Bale would have a big chance for Real Madrid when he was alone on goal, but he missed his shot and Andre Gomes hit the post for Valencia CF in the dying moments of the first half, the ball rebounded but Valencia CF attackers were not fast enough to capitalize on the chance.

In the second half the match was fairly equal, with Enzo Perez and Parejo really covering well in midfield and passing the ball really accurately and intelligently, while Gomes played a little higher up the pitch and was causing Real Madrid all sorts of problems with his long range shots and dribbling skills.

Valencia CF would equalize in the 52nd minute through Barragan who released a powerful shot that found its way into the back on the net on an assist from Jose Luis Gaya. This goal would give Valencia CF the boost that they needed and now the team could play with less pressure on them. This showed as Valencia CF were the better team in the following 10 minutes and Valencia CF would manage to score another goal, this time through Nicolas Ottamendi who headed a corner kick cross into the net.

Antonio Barragan has another scoring chance a little later on, but his famous terrible crossing and shooting hadn't left him and he shot the ball wide off of the goal. Thankfully this blunder didn't cost the team as Real Madrid had a big chance to score on their own, but this time it was Sergio Ramos who headed wide.

Real Madrid would attack exclusively in the last 10 minutes of the match, but Valencia's defense would hold hard and strong and they were able to repel and block most of Madrid's attacks. They did have few chances to score, but Valencia CF were able to hold.

Technical Details:
Valencia CF: Diego Alves, Shkodran Mustafi, Lucas Orban, Nicolás Otamendi, Enzo Pérez, Antonio Barragán (Sofiane Feghouli, m. 72), Pablo Piatti (José Gayà, m. 22), Dani Parejo, André Gomes, Álvaro Negredo (Rodrigo, m. 78), Paco Alcácer.

Real Madrid: Casillas, Carvajal, Pepe, S. Ramos, Marcelo, Kroos, Isco, James (Khedira, m. 70), Bale (Jesé, m. 70), Ronaldo, Benzema (Chicharito, m. 78).

Goals:
Cristianlo Ronaldo 0-1(p.g), 14 min.
Antonio Barragan 1-1, 52 min.
Nicolas Otamendi 2-1, 65 min.

Player Ratings:
Diego 7.5 - Made 2 key saves to prevent the team from conceding and was generally secure in his goalkeeping.
Barragan 8 - Crucial player tonight for Valencia CF as he caused all sorts of problems for Real Madrid with his running and he managed to score the equalizer. Could have had more goals as well if he was a bit more composed.
Mustafi 7 - Solid defending throughout, made few important interceptions and some good headers to clear danger.
Otamendi 8.5 - Rock solid at the back, had some key blocks to prevent what would have been clear goals and threatening from corners, as he scored the winning goal for Valencia CF.
Orban 7 - Had overall a good showing, he dealt with the threat coming from Bale easily, but he still does seem suspect at times, especially when he is under pressure.
Enzo 7.5 - For a player who's just joined the team just 4 days ago he did play as if he's been with the team for months, just goes to show how good and versatile the player is. Immensely good defensive work, full of running, provided some good passes and interplay with Parejo and this is a perfect debut for him.
Parejo 7.5 - Did well overall, but was slow off the start, unsure at times and was overshadowed by his fellow midfielders. Did provide the assist for the winning goal though through his corner kick so points for that.
Gomes 7.5 - Really threatening with his dribbles and movement, had few good long range shots on goal, one hit the post and one just went slightly wide, provided spaces for the other players to exploit.
Paco 6.5 - Didn't have the most service and was covered well by Real defenders, but was running intelligently.
Negredo 6.5 - A bit more effective than Paco as his sheer physical presence is enough, he provided a big glaring threat and came deep to get the ball.
Piatti N/A - Substituted early with an injury.
Subs:
Gaya 8 - Amazing offensive skills. He was just full of energy, lightning pace and willing runner on that left wing. His constant running was causing all sorts of problems for the opposition and he managed to score an assist for the equalizer.
Feghouli 6.5 - Replaced Barragan and it was going to be a tough job matching his contribution, he did well though, but in his time he was mostly relegated to defending, so his offensive contributions were limited, but helped out defensively immensly.
Moreno N/A - Not enough time.

Valencia CF vs Real Madrid Match Preview

Valencia CF vs Real Madrid Match Preview
Stadium: Mestalla
Date: 04.01.2015, 17:00 CET
17th matchday, La Liga
Coaches: Nuno Santos and Carlo Anceloti

The new year is here and with it come new challenges, one of those new challenges for Valencia CF is Real Madrid the current table leader  in Spain and one of the best teams the past year. It doesn't help that Real Madrid are coming to this match in great form, having won their last 21 official matches and will be looking to continue their record breaking run against Valencia CF tomorrow at the Mestalla.

Valencia CF have been in good form as well, having won their last 3 matches and beaten Rayo Vallecano in the cup in what was a second leg thriller game to continue forward in the Copa del Rey competition. Valencia CF also got a New Year's eve present in Enzo Perez who joined Valencia CF for 26 million euros from Benfica and who will be available to face against Real Madrid.

Valencia CF coach Nuno was trying out the midfield trio of Enzo Perez, Parejo and Gomes in training and unless he has a last minute change of hearth or something comes up, we should see those three starting and Enzo Perez would have his official debut for Valencia CF just days after transferring there and it will be excising to see him in a Valencia CF shirt and how he does. I hope the expectations aren't super high, after all he just came in and will need some time to gel and properly fit in, but he'll have a fast adaptation having played with Gomes and Moreno in Benfica.

Real Madrid showed a chip in their armor just 2 days ago when they lost to AC Milan 4-2 in a friendly match, but even though it was a friendly Real Madrid coach Carlo Anceloti fielded a strong squad, it was pretty much the same squad that has been destroying teams in La Liga and they lost. Its worthwhile mentioning that AC Milan aren't the best team out there, they've been mediocre this season, similar to the last one and are miles from the team that won championships left and right. So it was a weak AC Milan team against a very strong Madrid side and they managed to beat them.

So Nuno Santos has a blueprint to follow, he can watch that match and analyze exactly how Milan were able to win that game and what they did right, how he can implement that in his own team and he's had good 2 days to prepare the team for Real Madrid with tomorrow being the 3rd day.

Valencia CF Squad:
Goalkeepers: Alves, Yoel
Defenders: Barragan, Vezo, Mustafi, Otamendi, Gaya, Orban
Midfielders: Parejo, Enzo, Gomes, Gil, Feghouli, Piatti, De Paul
Forwards: Negredo, Paco, Moreno

Technical Details Valencia CF (probable setups):
Formation: 4-3-3
Line-up: Diego; Barragan, Mustafi, Otamendi, Gaya; Enzo, Parejo, Gomes; Feghouli, Negredo, Piatti.
Tactics: Low defensive line, own third pressure, long passing, deep laying defensive midfielder, counter attacks.

Match Result:
Valencia CF 3-2 Real Madrid
Valencia CF have been in good form, the team had a proper rest for several days and we've also gotten a big reinforcement in Enzo Perez, while Real Madrid have been in amazing form, but they showed a chip in their armor, AC Milan showed that they can be beaten in a strong fashion and AC Milan aren't the best team out there. So if Nuno can analyze Real Madrid's weaknesses and the team is able to properly shut them down in attack then Valencia can win. They aren't as strong in defense and if they don't get big opportunities in front of goal they can be beaten. I'm giving the slight edge to Valencia CF this time and predicting a 3-2 win for Valencia CF.

Valencia CF interested in Martin Montoya

Valencia CF and Antonio Barragan are trying to reach an agreement over a new contract deal which would have him extend his stay in Valencia CF till 2020. Antonio Barragan current contract expires in this summer and he is one of the weakest paid players, but under Nuno Santos he is first choice and in his new contract his salary would be significantly improved.
However the contract negotiations are going really slowly and at this point its uncertain if a deal would be reaches so Valencia CF is starting to look at a number of right backs as possibly replacements for Barragan should contract negotations fail.

One of the players Valencia CF are interested in is Martin Montoya the right back from Barcelona FC. He hasn't been featured much under Louis Enrique and is looking for a club where he could have more minutes in. Martin Montoya is a product of Barcelona's youth system and he came in through the ranks from Barcelona youth teams to Barcelona B and eventually to Barcelona first team. He's featured 39 times for Barcelona FC in over 4 years, but he's never managed to win a first place spot.

Valencia CF is interested in him as he will come in relatively cheap and the fact that he is still very young at 23 years old is very positive as the club is looking to build a team for the future. He is also one of the few available right back and wouldn't mind transferring to Valencia CF due to his lack of playing time in Barcelona.

Enzo Perez to debut against Real Madrid

Valencia CF coach Nuno Santos was testing out in training a midfield trio of Enzo Perez, Daniel Parejo and Andre Gomes, since Javi Fuego is unavailable due to accumulating 5 yellow cards and that is likely the midfield to face Real Madrid.

Felipe Augusto and Zuculini are also available for selection, but since Felipe hasn't impressed so far and Zuculini hasn't played much at all, its obvious that Enzo Perez is going to have a very fast debut for his new team.

The club will also have his official presentation tomorrow, January the 2nd I believe around 12:00 O'clock CET in the stadium.

New Year Wishes

What are your new year wishes for 2015

1.  Obviously finishing with a top 4 place and preferably 3rd or even 2nd

2.  Referees being more vigilant on players cheating, e.g. feigning injury every time they are tackled and holding their faces every time they go up for a high ball and rolling around the floor looking to get other players booked or sent off.

3.  Hope we beat Real Madrid on Sunday with a final minute dodgy goal after playing well in the game. Hopefully a goal in the 4th minute of 3 minutes added time. We need some good fortune from referees.

I will stay on 3 wishes and leave the rest open.

Valencia CF reach deal for Enzo Perez!

Valencia CF have made a statement on their website confirming that a deal has been reached with Benfica for the transfer of Enzo Perez. The deal will be made official on the 2nd of January and is dependent on the player passing a medical. All signs so far seem to point to the deal being worth 25 million euros plus some variables depending on performance. The players has already arrived in the city of Valencia!

This deal was planned in the summer and was supposed to be completed with the Andre Gomes and Rodrigo deals but Benfica kept changing their demands in order to retain their players as they felt they were losing too many star players at once. In the end, some pressuring for Enzo Perez himself and the persistance of Peter Lim made the club realize that they couldn't hold on to Perez any longer.

This also means that Valencia CF have beaten Manchester United in the competition for the player. Enzo will add some much needed experience to the Valencia CF midfield, being 28 years old he will be one of the older players in the squad, not to mention he is a 2014 World Cup finalist with Argentina.

The transfer window has yet to open (it will in 2 days on January 1st) and this could be only one of a few transactions Valencia CF makes. The arrival of Enzo, a midfield, naturally means that a midfielder has to leave, in this case most likely Zuculini. However there is also word that Felipe Augusto will be sent on loan somewhere as he has failed to impress. If both leave, then Valencia CF would need yet another midfielder. Valencia CF have reportedly already submitted a 2 million euro bid for 20 year old Ghanian Bernard Mensah who plays his football in Portugal. Other names I heard mentioned for the midfield position were Franco Vázques (Palermo), and Dennis Praet (Anderlecht) but Mensah seems to have the most credibility to it.

How will Perez fit into the team? So far I've read that Javi Fuego will be dropped to a bench role and Parejo will drop back as CDM with Enzo Perez and Gomes playing further up from him in midfield. However, many different combinations are possible and Nuno may try out different combinations since the most recent formation with two forwards - Alcacer and Negredo - has proved promising.

Thanks for reading! Let us know what you think about Enzo and what he brings to the team. What about Fuego's role in the team now? Augusto and Zuculini role? Should we get another midfielder like is currently being planned? What formation should we play and who should start? Let us know!

Amunt Valencia! Bienvenido Enzo Perez!
